Government, transport entrepreneurs reach agreement, committee formed under joint secretary
The government and the transport entrepreneurs reached an agreement on Monday.
The government called the transport operators for talks after the Public Transport Protection Struggle Committee announced an indefinite transport strike across the country starting today.
A meeting held at the Home Minister this morning formed a committee comprising representatives from various ministries and transport entrepreneurs under the headship of the joint secretary of the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, informed Home Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Ram Chandra Tiwari.
There will be eight members from various ministries on behalf of the government and four members from transport entrepreneurs and workers in the committee.
The meeting has decided not to implement the law related to ride-sharing services introduced recently by the Gandaki Province.
The Gandaki Province government had passed the regulations pertaining to ride-sharing through the Cabinet meeting on May 14.
The Supreme Court on June 27, 2024 had urged the government to fast-track the regulation of ride-sharing services.
IMF Mission Chief Jahan calls on FinMin Paudel
Visiting International Monetary Fund (IMF) Mission Chief Sarwat Jahan today paid a courtesy call on Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Bishnu Prasad Paudel.
During the meeting held at the Finance Ministry, the two made the sixth review of the Extended Credit Facility (ECF), discussing the economic structural issues.
Due to a sharp decline in foreign exchange reserves, Nepal reported a significant deficit in its balance of payments and subsequently obtained an Extended Credit Facility equivalent to USD 395.9 million in 2022.
This amount equals 180 percent of Nepal's Special Drawing Rights (SDR) quota.
The IMF agreed to disburse the loan in several installments over a four-year period to support budget financing.
An IMF mission team is presently in Nepal for the sixth review of this loan facility.
Ukraine launches major drone strikes on Russian airbases
Ukraine carried out its largest long-range drone attack, hitting four Russian military bases in an operation involving 117 drones. President Zelensky said the strikes damaged 34 percent of Russia’s strategic missile carriers.
Russia confirmed attacks in five regions, calling them a “terrorist act”, BBC reported.
The strikes occurred before of peace talks in Istanbul, where hopes are low.
Meanwhile, Ukraine reported missile strikes on Kharkiv that injured six people, and Russia claimed to have prevented a railway sabotage attempt, according to BBC.
Eight burned in Pro-Israel rally attack
Eight people were injured after a man allegedly set them on fire during a pro-Israel rally at Pearl Street Mall in the United States.
The FBI is treating the incident as a suspected act of terrorism. The attacker, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, 45, an Egyptian national whose US visa expired in 2023, reportedly shouted “Free Palestine” while using Molotov cocktails and a makeshift flamethrower against demonstrators, BBC reported.
Soliman is in custody. Israel's Foreign Minister condemned the incident, describing it as an antisemitic terror attack on Jews.
NAC starts operating flights from Tarigaun Airport
The Nepal Airlines Corporation (NAC) has started operating flights from the Tarigaun Airport.
NAC Tulsipur Section Chief, Bal Bahadur Sunar informed that the Corporation has been operating flights from the Tarigaun Airport in Tulsipur-12 five days a week based on the demand of passengers.
According to him, flights are being operated on five other days in the week except Wednesday and Saturday.
Due to lack of regular air service at Tarigaun, passengers had to go to Nepalgunj or Bhairahawa.
Also, the runway of the airport is small, so large aircraft have not been able to land. Currently, only a 19-seat aircraft can land at the airport.
The runway of the airport is now 750 meters long. There have been repeated calls to extend the runway.
This airport was built in 2011 BS.
1 killed, 6 injured in Nawalpur ambulance, school van collision
A person died and six others were injured when an ambulance and school van collided with each other at Dumkauli Chowk in Devchuli Municipality-2, Nawalpur on Monday.
The ambulance (Na 4 Cha 1646), carrying a patient, heading towards Narayangarh from Butwal collided head-on with the van (Ba 20 Cha 72) this morning, DSP Madhu Nepal said.
School van driver Kul Prasad Subedi (52) of Devchuli Municipality-1, who was critically injured in the incident, breathed his last during the course of treatment at the Old Medical College, Bharatpur, Chitwan, Nepal informed.
Laxmi Rai (36), Ishu Rai (25) and Sneha Pariyar (25) of Golpark, Butwal Sub-Metropolitan City-3, Rupandehi, who were travelling in the ambulance were injured in the accident.
They have been sent to Chitwan for treatment, police said.
Similarly, two students—Ayusha Gautam (10) and Sokhniya Roka (6)—who were in the school van sustained minor injuries. They have returned home after receiving primary treatment at the local Bhabisya Polyclinic, according to police.
Further investigation into the incident is underway.
UML holding PP meeting at 1 pm today
CPN-UML is holding its Parliamentary Party meeting on Monday.
In the meeting to be held at 1 pm in Lhotse Hall of the Federal Parliament building, New Baneshwor, matters related to the budget presented in the Parliament on May 29 and contemporary situation would be discussed, Chief Whip Mahesh Kumar Bartaula informed.
The meeting to be presided over by party Chair and Parliamentary Party leader KP Sharma Oli will make in-depth discussions and deliberations from various perspectives on the budget.
In this connection, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bishnu Prasad Paudel, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel, and Vice Chair of the National Planning Commission Dr. Shivraj Adhikari will provide analytical information, it has been learnt.
‘Mahabhoj’ to release on June 13
The Nepali film ‘Mahabhoj’, which was originally scheduled to release on May 29, will now hit theaters nationwide on June 13, the production team announced. The release was postponed due to unforeseen circumstances, and the filmmakers have apologized to the audience for the delay. Director Dinesh Raut expressed gratitude for the patience and support shown by viewers. “We were unable to release Mahabhoj on the scheduled date due to certain special circumstances. We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience caused,” he said.
He added that the film tells a story rooted in Nepali society and encouraged audiences to support it upon its new release date.
A preview show held in Kathmandu a few days ago drew positive feedback from attendees, who noted the film’s engaging narrative and entertainment value. The story is said to focus not only on cooperative fraud victims but also to offer broader social relevance.
‘Mahabhoj’ features performances by Dayahang Rai, Aryan Sigdel, Khagendra Lamichhane, Anjana Baraili, Malika Mahat, Gaumaya Gurung, Basundhara Bhusal, and Mohan Niraula. The film is produced by Himal Kadel under the banner of Clock Work Creation and Picture Frame.
