Flash floods kill eight in northern Vietnam

Eight people have died and three are missing after flash floods and landslides hit Dien Bien province, northern Vietnam, in recent days.

Around 60 homes were damaged, and 30 villages remain isolated. Nearly 700 personnel are involved in search efforts, according to Xinhua.

Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha urged swift relief and emphasized the safety of both residents and rescue teams.

Heavy rainfall likely in hilly areas of Bagmati tonight

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted general changes in the weather across the country today. 

Moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is likely to take place in several hilly areas of the Koshi, Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim Provinces, as well as in some parts of the Tarai region this afternoon, the Division said. 

Similarly, there is a possibility of moderate rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning in many hilly areas of the country, including the Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces and some parts of the Tarai tonight. 

There are chances of heavy rainfall in some hilly areas of Bagmati Province. With this, there is a risk of soil erosion, flooding, and extreme water flow patterns, it is stated. 

The Division has urged all concerned to remain alert with chances of urban and Tarai areas experiencing flooding, and the water level rising in large and small rivers and streams. 

Further, the public and all relevant organizations have been advised to take precautionary and preparedness measures with excessive rainfall likely to impact daily life, agriculture, health, tourism, construction, road, and airways. 

 

Floods kill over 60 in northern China

Severe flooding triggered by days of heavy rain has killed at least 60 people in northern China, including 44 in Beijing, officials said. Among the dead, 31 were residents of an elderly care home in Miyun district, according to Xinhua.

The nearby Hebei province reported 16 deaths, with several others missing after landslides and rising waters overwhelmed villages near the Miyun Reservoir, which reached record levels.

Authorities say extreme weather, likely worsened by climate change, has also disrupted local industries and posed major challenges for emergency response, Xinhua reported.

Heavy rainfall likely in Bagmati and Gandaki today

There is a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces today.

According to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning is also likely at a few places in the Tarai region of Lumbini and one or two places of Madhesh Province. 

This afternoon, the weather will be generally cloudy in the hilly areas of the country including Lumbini and Sudupaschim Provinces and partly cloudy in the Tarai region. 

Later, tonight the weather will remain generally cloudy in the hilly areas of the country including Koshi, Madhesh and Sudurpaschim Provinces and partly cloudy in the Tarai region. There is a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at a few places in the hilly areas of the country including Madhesh and Sudurpaschim Provinces and one or two places in the remaining Tarai region.

Currently, the influence of monsoon winds is active across the country, adds the Department.

 

Heavy rainfall likely in hilly region of Gandaki Province

The Weather Forecasting Division has said there is a nationwide impact of monsoon wind at present. 

The low pressure belt of monsoon is around its normal range.

The weather service said it will be generally cloudy across the country in the afternoon. 

Moderate rainfall with lightning and thunder is expected in most of the hilly regions of Sudurpaschim Province and Tarai belt.

Some places in the hilly region in Gandaki Province are predicted to have heavy rainfall  tonight. 

 

 

Heavy rains and flooding kill at least 30 in Beijing

At least 30 people have lost their lives in Beijing as relentless rainfall triggers severe flooding across northern China, BBC reported.

Authorities have evacuated around 80,000 residents from high-risk areas, with rain expected to continue through today.

President Xi Jinping has ordered urgent search and rescue operations to minimize further casualties.

Beijing is prone to extreme summer weather, with the worst flooding in recent years recorded in July 2012, when 79 people died, according to BBC.

Heavy rains trigger deadly landslide and flood warnings in Northern China

A landslide caused by intense rainfall has killed four people and left eight missing near Chengde in Hebei province, Xinhua reported.

In Beijing’s Miyun district, over 4,400 people were evacuated as floods and landslides hit villages, cutting power to more than 10,000 residents.

Flood alerts have been issued in at least 11 provinces, including Beijing and Shanxi, with more heavy rain expected in the coming days.

Authorities have sent emergency teams to Hebei and allocated 50m yuan ($7m) for recovery. Scientists link the surge in extreme weather to climate change and the intensifying East Asian monsoon, according to Xinhua.

The weather today will be generally cloudy throughout the country, with a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at some places in the hilly areas of the country and at a few places in the Tarai. 

According to the Division, there is also a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places of Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Privinces.. 

The Division stated that the weather will continue to remain generally cloudy throughout the country tonight. There is a possibility of moderate rainfall with thunder and lightning at some places in the hilly areas of the country including the Gandaki Province and at some places in the Tarai.

Landslide in northern Pakistan kills 3, 15 missing

At least three people were killed and fifteen are missing after a landslide, triggered by heavy monsoon rains, hit Gilgit-Baltistan’s Diamer district on Monday, officials said.

Rescue teams recovered bodies and evacuated four injured, while efforts continue to locate the missing. Hundreds of stranded tourists were also brought to safety, Al Jazeera reported.

The monsoon has caused widespread damage across Pakistan, with 221 deaths reported since late June.

In view of the risk of floods, landslides, and debris flow, the Division has urged the residents to apply precautions and safety measures in urban and Tarai regions. 

It has been informed that water levels in large and small rivers and rivulets could rise, potentially affecting daily life, agriculture, health, tourism, and transportation on roads and air traffic near river areas.

With monsoon winds impacting the length and breadth of the country, there is possibility of heavy to very heavy rainfall at some places of Koshi, Bagmati and Gandaki Provinces as well as in the hilly regions of rest of the provinces. 

Furthermore, light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is likely to occur at many places of hilly regions of the country including Koshi, Madesh, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali Provinces, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology.

As the weather remains generally cloudy throughout the country, there are also chances of light to moderate snowfall at some places of the high hilly and mountainous region of the country.

Tonight, the weather will remain generally cloudy throughout the country. 

Light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning is possible at many places of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces and at a few places in the rest of the country. There are chances of very heavy rainfall at a few places of Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces.

Light to moderate snowfall is likely at some places of the high hilly and mountainous region of the country, adds the Department.

 

 

PM Oli urges people to avoid unnecessary travel amid heavy rainfall warnings

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has urged the general public to refrain from non-essential travel and stay in safe areas.

His appeal comes amidst the Weather Forecasting Division’s prediction of heavy and widespread rainfall across the country while directing the security personnel to remain on alert.

He also urged the concerned authorities of the federal, provincial and local governments to remain active in minimizing the damage caused by potential disasters including floods, landslides and inundation.

Taking to social media, Prime Minister Oli said, “The Meteorological Forecasting Division has predicted heavy rain in various parts of the country this afternoon. He urged the people to stay informed through updates from the security agencies to take necessary precautions to avoid monsoon-induced disasters. I would like to request all to avoid unnecessary travel and direct the security agencies to remain on alert.”

Earlier, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority had urged the people to be cautious, saying that there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in various parts of the country from July 19-21.  

 

Four dead, over 1,300 evacuated as heavy rains lash South Korea

Four people have died and more than 1,300 have been evacuated as torrential rains hit South Korea, prompting the government to issue its highest disaster alert, BBC reported.

Among the victims were two elderly men, a man killed by a collapsed wall, and one who suffered cardiac arrest. Seosan, the worst-hit city, saw over 400mm of rain in just 12 hours — a level described as a once-in-a-century event.

Authorities have warned of ongoing risks from landslides and flash floods and urged people to avoid riverbanks and underground spaces. While rains are expected to ease, forecasters warn of possible heatwaves next week, according to BBC.

Currently there is an influence of monsoon winds across the country and the monsoon's low pressure line is situated near the average location in the west and slightly north from the average location in the east, the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology said. 

The weather will be generally cloudy across the country this afternoon with chances of light to moderate rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in many places of Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces, as well as some places in other provinces. 

According to the Department, there is a possibility of heavy rainfall in some places of Koshi Province. 

As predicted, heavy rainfall will also occur in one or two places in Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces. 

Light to moderate rain and snowfall are expected in some areas of the high hills and mountainous regions of the country. 

There is also a possibility of winds in the Tarai region of Koshi Province and some places in Madhes Province. 

Likewise, there will be partial to generally cloudy weather across the country tonight. 

There are chances of light to moderate rain along with thunder and lightning in some areas of the hilly regions, including Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpashchim Provinces , as well as in some other provinces. 

The regular weather bulletin issued by the Department at 6:00 am today stated that there is a possibility of heavy rain in one or two places in the Koshi, Madhes, and Sudurpashchim Provinces. 

Additionally, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain and snowfall in some areas of the high hills and Himalayan regions of the country. 

The strong wind is predicted in some areas of Madhes Province. 

The Department has warned of the risk of floods, landslides, and river overflow due to potential rainfall and has urged residents of urban and Terai areas to adopt necessary precautionary safety measures.
