Heavy rain paralyses life in India's financial capital Mumbai

Heavy rainfall in India's financial capital Mumbai has disrupted the lives of millions of people, submerging roads and leading to flight and train cancellations, BBC reported.

Many parts of the city remain inundated in waist-deep water, with videos showing residents swimming through waterlogged roads as garbage gushed out from clogged sewers. 

Authorities on Tuesday rescued nearly 600 people who got stuck on an overcrowded monorail system that stopped mid-journey. At least 23 of them had to be treated for suffocation, civic authorities have said. 

Most schools and colleges remain shut. Some 350 people have been evacuated from the city's low-lying areas and have been shifted to temporary shelters, according to BBC.

Hurricane threatens US East Coast with life-threatening waves

Hurricane Erin has re-intensified into a Category 4 storm, bringing heavy rains to the southeastern Bahamas and Turks and Caicos of the United States though no direct landfall is expected. Puerto Rico saw widespread power outages, but most electricity has been restored.

Forecasters warn Erin will stay “large and dangerous” as it moves between Bermuda and the US East Coast this week. North Carolina’s Outer Banks have begun evacuations on Hatteras Island, while officials caution that life-threatening surf and rip currents could affect much of the eastern seaboard, BBC reported.

Heavy rain shuts Mumbai schools, disrupts city

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued a red alert for Mumbai, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) ordered all schools closed, including afternoon shifts, as waterlogging disrupted traffic and daily activities across several areas, Firstpost reported.

The red alert—the highest in IMD’s warning system—covered Borivali, Thane, Kalyan, Mulund, Powai, Santa Cruz, Chembur, Worli, Navi Mumbai, and Colaba. Authorities urged residents to stay indoors unless necessary and follow official safety guidelines.

The IMD also warned of a flash flood risk in Mumbai and its suburbs until early August 19, while other parts of Maharashtra remain under yellow and orange alerts, according to Firstpost.

 

Heavy rainfall likely in Koshi and Bagmati

There is a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces today.

With the weather remaining generally cloudy across the country, there is also a possibility of moderate rainfall at some places in the Tarai and hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati, and the hilly areas of the remaining provinces. 

Tonight, the weather will be generally cloudy in Koshi, Madhesh, and the hilly areas of the remaining provinces, and partially cloudy at other places of the country. 

There is a possibility of moderate rainfall at a few places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi, Gandaki, and Sudurpaschim Provinces, and the hilly areas of the remaining provinces, and at one or two places in the Tarai region. 

There is a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the Tarai and hilly areas of Koshi Province.

The monsoon has become weak though water vapor-rich air is still entering from the Bay of Bengal, adds the Department.

 

Flash floods kill more than 300 in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir

At least 307 people have died in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir after monsoon floods and landslides swept through the region, BBC reported.

Most deaths occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where homes were destroyed and a rescue helicopter crashed, killing five crew. Nine were killed in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and five in Gilgit-Baltistan. Authorities declared disaster zones as heavy rain is forecast to continue until 21 August.

In Indian-administered Kashmir, flash floods wiped out a Himalayan village, leaving at least 60 dead. According to BBC, scientists link the worsening monsoon disasters to climate change.

Monsoon active across the country, heavy rainfall likely in some provinces

The Weather Forecasting Division has said the country will remain cloudy today. 

As the low pressure belt of monsoon is around the Tarai region, Nepal is predicted to have active monsoon in the next 24 hours.

Some of the places in Madhes, Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Provinces will have heavy rainfall. Few places in these provinces will have torrential rains. 

Karnali Province is also predicted to have heavy rainfall in one to two places. 

Cloudy weather is forecasted in Gandaki, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces tonight. 

Moderate rainfall is likely in the hilly region of Gandaki and Karnali Provinces. 

Most of the places in the Tarai belt are expected to have moderate rainfall tonight. 

 

 

Heavy rain leaves 3 dead in Japan's Kyushu region

Record-breaking rainfall from a seasonal front struck Japan’s Kyushu region on Tuesday, causing three fatalities in Kagoshima, Kumamoto, and Fukuoka prefectures due to landslides and river flooding, Xinhua reported.

In Ishikawa Prefecture, a road collapse led to a vehicle accident, injuring three people.

Emergency teams continue rescue efforts as heavy rain warnings remain in effect.

Taiwan to evacuate hundreds as Typhoon Podul barrels towards southeast

Taiwan is preparing for Typhoon Podul, expected to hit the southeastern city of Taitung on Wednesday with winds up to 155 kph (96 mph). Nearly 700 people in Hualien County are being evacuated due to flooding risks from a landslide-formed dam, Reuters reported.

After hitting the southeast, Podul will move toward the densely populated west coast and then China’s Fujian province. Heavy rain of up to 600 mm has been forecasted in southern mountains.

The region is still recovering from July’s storms, which caused flooding, power outages, and four deaths. Authorities urge residents to stay alert and follow safety orders.

 

Flash floods kill 10, Leave 33 missing in China’s Gansu province

At least 10 people have died and 33 remain missing after flash floods swept through Gansu province in northwestern China, state media reported Friday. The floods, triggered by days of heavy rain since August 7, have damaged roads and villages, leaving streets coated in silt and debris, according to Al Jazeera.

President Xi Jinping has ordered “all-out” rescue efforts and urged authorities to step up disaster prevention amid increasingly frequent extreme weather. China has faced record rainfall in recent weeks, with severe flooding killing over 60 people across the north, including Beijing, since late July.

Japan issues heavy rain emergency in Kagoshima

Japan’s weather agency has issued its highest-level heavy rain warning for Kirishima in Kagoshima Prefecture after record downpours triggered fears of landslides, flooding, and overflowing rivers, according to Xinhua.

Kirishima recorded 107.5 mm of rain in one hour early Friday, with a 12-hour total of over 480 mm — nearly double its August average.

Torrential rain is forecast to continue across Kyushu through Sunday, with up to 200 mm expected in southern areas and 120 mm in the north. Authorities have urged residents to stay alert as dangerous conditions may already be present, Xinhua reported.

 

 

Monsoon's influence to prevail across the country today

The low-pressure line of the monsoon is located to the north of average position in the Tarai region of Nepal. 

Although the monsoon influence is prevailing across the country, the impact of water vapour seems somewhat weak, the weather forecasting division indicated. 

According to the division, the weather will generally be cloudy across the country this afternoon. There are high chances of heavy rainfall in hilly and Tarai areas of Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. 

Likewise, a few places in the hilly areas of the rest of the country, and some areas of Madhes and the remaining Tarai region may experience moderate rainfall, the division predicted. 

There is a possibility of heavy rain in one or two places in the hilly areas of Lumbini Province, including its Tarai region, as well as in the hilly areas of Koshi, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim Provinces. 

The weather is expected to remain generally cloudy across the country tonight. A moderate rainfall is likely to take place in some areas of the hilly regions of Madhes, Koshi, Bagmati, and Gandaki Provinces, and a few places in the remaining hilly and Tarai regions. 

The division's weather bulletin indicates the possibility of heavy rain in one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi and Bagmati Provinces..

The weather will be generally cloudy in the hilly areas of the country including Koshi Province and Lumbini Provinces and partly cloudy in the rest of the country today. 

Later tonight, the weather will remain generally cloudy throughout the country. 

There is a possibility of moderate rainfall at some places in the hilly and Tarai areas of Koshi and Lumbini Provinces including Madhes and at a few places in the hilly and Tarai areas of the rest of the provinces. 

There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall at one or two places in the hilly areas of Koshi Province.

Although the monsoon is influencing the country, the effect of the water vapor-rich air has been somewhat weaker as of today, adds the Department.

 

Heavy rainfall likely in Koshi, Sudurpaschim Provinces

The monsoon wind is active across the country at present. 

The Weather Forecasting Division said Koshi and Sudurpaschim Provinces are likely to have heavy rainfall today.

The weather service has appealed to all concerned to be aware in daily life, and in the sectors of health, transport and aviation in the wake of adverse weather.

Currently, the low pressure belt of monsoon is towards Tarai region of Nepal- on the northern side of its average range. It results in cloudy weather in most of the hilly regions across the country. 

Few places in Madhes Province are receiving moderate rainfall now. 

The moderate rainfall is predicted also in some places of hilly regions in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces  today.

It will be generally cloudy in the country tonight.

 

 

Dozens feared trapped as cloudburst triggers flash floods in India

A cloudburst in northern Indian state of Uttarakhand’s Uttarkashi district triggered flash floods in Dharali village, leaving several people feared trapped under debris, BBC reported.

The sudden downpour around 1:30 PM (local time) swelled the Kheerganga river, sending muddy water surging through roads and buildings. The ancient Kalpkedar temple is also believed to be damaged.

Rescue teams, including the army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police, are on the ground, but ongoing rain and poor connectivity are slowing efforts, according to BBC.

Dharali, a popular tourist spot with hotels and restaurants, was hit hard. Eyewitnesses said the surge came so fast that people had no time to escape.

 

Floods and landslides kill 10 in northern Vietnam

Heavy rains from Thursday to Friday triggered floods and landslides in Vietnam’s Dien Bien and Son La provinces, leaving 10 dead and four injured.

In Dien Bien, all 10 victims were confirmed after two missing people were found. Nearly 300 houses were damaged or affected. In Son La, several homes were destroyed, and villages were cut off due to collapsed roads, Al Jazeera reported.

Rescue teams are in action, and the government has approved $9.5m in aid for recovery.

Rains elates drought-hit Madhes

To a much relief to the drought-hit Madhes province, the rainfall occurred well in the last 24 hours. The farmers welcomed the rains, cultivated land, and transplanted paddy seedlings on Sunday.    

Although the eastern belt of country witnessed adequate rains, the Tarai region had light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours, said the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, adding that the eastern Tarai did paddy plantation with the adequate rains.    

Meteorologist at Weather Forecasting Division, Binu Maharjan, informed that the Tarai region had the rainfall because the low pressure belt of monsoon was on the northern side of its average range- towards Nepal. However, there is cloudy weather across the country and rainfall was partial.    

The Anarmani Birta Station of Jhapa district recorded the rainfall at 151.6 ML in the last 24 hours.    

Some places in most of the provinces saw heavy rainfall during the day on Sunday. Currently, the rainfall is occurring in Koshi and Madhes provinces.
