Heavy rainfall likely in hilly areas of Gandaki and Sudurpaschim

The low-pressure line of the monsoon is currently situated around the average position, the Weather Forecasting Division said. 

This afternoon the weather is expected to be generally cloudy across the country. 

According to the division, there is a chance of moderate rainfall in some areas of the hilly regions in the country, including Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki, and Lumbini Provinces, as well as in some parts of the Tarai. 

Heavy rainfall is likely in one or two places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki Provinces, and in the Terai and hilly regions of Lumbini province. 

Tonight, the mountainous areas of the country will generally remain cloudy, while the remaining areas will have partial cloud cover. 

Additionally, there is a chance of moderate rainfall in some places in the hilly areas. Heavy rain is expected to take place in one or two areas of the hilly regions of Gandaki and Sudurpashchim Provinces. 

In view of potential risks resulting from landslides and debris flows in the hilly areas and thereby rising water levels in large and small rivers and streams, the Division has urged one and all to stay alert with preparedness. 

 

Vietnam Vice President Xuan arriving in Nepal on Saturday

At the cordial invitation of Vice President Ramsahay Prasad Yadav, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Vo Thi Anh Xuan is paying an official visit to Nepal from August 23 to 25.

The visit marks the first-ever highest-level engagement from Vietnam to Nepal.

During the visit, the two Vice Presidents will lead their respective delegations at the Nepal-Vietnam bilateral meeting scheduled for August 24 in Kathmandu. 

In addition, Vice President Xuan will call on and hold courtesy meetings with high dignitaries of Nepal, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

 

This year holds a special significance as it marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

 

Vice President Vo Thi Anh Xuan will depart Kathmandu for Hanoi on August 25.

 

Jaishankar meets Putin as India stresses Russia ties amid Trump tariff tension

Foreign Minister S Jaishankar called on Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday as India stressed the importance of bilateral trade between the long-time partners, even as the US has imposed penal tariffs on India for buying oil from Russia despite the war in Ukraine, Hindustan Times reported.

Jaishankar earlier held talks with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov. At the press briefing after it, when asked about the US tariffs, he questioned the logic of the Americans' argument.

The Modi government has been stressing its ties with Russia, and working mutually on a thaw with neighbour China, ever since President Donald Trump singled India out for the highest tariffs the US has imposed as part of its new, inward-looking trade and foreign policy.

Before going to Russia, Jaishankar met Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi in New Delhi, according to Hindustan Times.

School Education Bill endorsed

The Education, Health and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives endorsed the School Education Bill.

A meeting of the Committee held in Singhadurbar on Thursday passed the Bill after holding discussions on the Committee report.

CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Swatantra Party and Rastriya Prajatantra Party, however, floated differing views on some sections of the Bill.

 

Three Indonesian women held

Police have arrested three Indonesian women for engaging in suspicious activities.

The Department of Immigration apprehended them, who came to Nepal on tourist and student visas, after they were found to be engaging in suspicious activities.

According to a source at the Immigration Department, one of them came to Nepal on a tourist visa and two on student visa.

Preliminary investigation, however, revealed that they were found to be not enrolled in any educational institution.

Immigration sources said that they came on student visas and found to be operating a girls' hostel in the name of Himalayan Education and Welfare Society, an organization related to the Muslim organization, in Dhobighat, Lalitpur.

It has been learnt that they were found to be teaching Turkish and Quran in the hostel as well as promoting the Muslim religion.

Second edition of NPL to be held from November 17

The second edition of the Nepal Premier League (NPL) will start  from November 17. 

Issuing a statement on Thursday, Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) spokesperson Chhumbi Lama said that the second edition of the NPL will be held from November 17 to December 1.

According to CAN, the second edition of the NPL will also be held at the Tribhuvan University Cricket Ground, Kirtipur.

The schedule of the tournament will be made public soon, the CAN informed.

A mini auction for the second edition of the NPL was held on August 9.

 

 

 

 

 

Raute community’s senior member Nandaram Shahi passes away

Endangered Raute community has lost its another senior member.

Nandaram Shahi, a senior member of the Raute community, passed away on Thursday.

Shahi (75) died of a heart attack this morning.

They had migrated from Chandanpur, Birendranagar Municipality-11, Surkhet some time ago.

Lal Bahadur Khatri, who was working as a teacher for the Raute Project, said that Shahi, who had been living in the Jhuprakhola forest of Lekbeshi Municipality-10 in Surkhet, passed away today.

Nandaram Shahi’s wife had died just a year ago.

He has seven grand children. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Nepse plunges by 9. 22 points on Thursday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) plunged by 9. 22 points to close at 2, 757. 97 points on Thursday.

Similarly, the sensitive index dropped by 0. 69 points to close at 474. 26 points.

A total of 16,855,906-unit shares of 319 companies were traded for Rs 5. 02 billion.

Meanwhile,  Bikash Hydropower Company Limited (BHCL) was the top gainer today with its price surging by 9. 99 percent. 

At the end of the day, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 1. 56 trillion.
