Curfew relaxed in Kathmandu Valley

The Nepal Army has continued curfew in Kathmandu, Lalitpur and Bhaktapur.

Issuing a statement, the Directorate of Public Relations and Information of Nepal Army stated that there is a need to gradually relax the curfew imposed for for the protection of citizens' lives and property.

The Nepal Army said that people will be allowed to travel from 6 am to 10 am  and from 5 pm to 7 pm today for essential works.

The Army has also stated that employees working in public institutions, including government offices, banks and financial institutions, can travel to and from their offices by showing their identity cards.

Similarly, passengers of domestic and international flights will be able to travel to and from the airport by showing their flight tickets.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Landslide obstructs Kaligandaki Corridor

The Kaligandaki Corridor has been obstructed due to a landslide triggered by incessant rains since Wednesday night. 

The road has been completely blocked since last night after a landslide took place at Rakse in Kaligandaki Rural Municipality-2 under the Gulmi section of the Kaligandaki Corridor, said Ganga Bahadur Saru, Information Officer of the District Police Office, Gulmi.

A police team has been deployed from the Purtighat police post to the landslide site this morning to clear the road. 

However, continuous rainfall is hampering efforts to clear the landslide debris piled up on the road.

As a result, vehicles traveling to Palpa and Butwal via Parbat, Baglung and Ridi have remained stuck. Information Officer Saru said that local construction company Kalika Construction has kept machines ready to clear the road for traffic once the rain stops.

 

 

Four escaped prisoners arrested

The District Police Office, Baglung has arrested four prisoners who had escaped from the District Jail, Kaski and the District Jail, Myagdi.

They were apprehended at the Maldhunga checkpost on Wednesday, as they were trying to enter into Baglung, shared Police Inspector Keshav Thapa of the District Police Office, Baglung.

Three  prisoners had escaped from the Kaski District Jail and one from the District Jail in Myagdi.

 

Weather to remain cloudy across the country today

The weather will remain generally cloudy across the country today.

As a result, there is a possibility of moderate rainfall in some places in the hilly regions of the country including Koshi, Madhes, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces and in a few places in the remaining Tarai regions, according to the Meteorological Forecasting Division.

There is also a possibility of heavy rainfall in one or two places in the hilly regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces and in some parts of Madhes Province..

 

 

1 killed, 7 inmates injured in Dhading Prison

The Nepal Army personnel have opened fire after inmates at the Dhading District Prison tried to escape.

A prisoner, aged around 75, has died after being shot at during the incident. Seven prisoners have been injured.

According to Chief District Officer Bijayraj Subedi, the army opened fire after the prisoners tried to break through the security cordon and escape.

Seven people from the Nepal Police and Armed Police Force were injured in the incident. The prisoners who were injured in the shooting have been sent to Kathmandu for treatment.

On Tuesday, prisoners set fire to the prison, demanding their release, saying that former Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane and other prisoners had been released from Nakkhu prison in Kathmandu.

Before opening fire, the army had tried to control the situation by using water cannons. The army opened fire after they started attacking the army personnel itself.

There are 243 prisoners including nine women in the Dhading District Jail.

 

“All parties should present themselves with restraint and unity to take the country towards peace”

Nepali Congress General Secretaries Gagan Kumar Thapa and Bishwa Prakash Sharma have welcomed the initiative taken by the President to find a way out of the current difficult situation through talks and dialogue.

In a joint statement today, they have urged all parties to seek a solution through dialogue after necessary consultations, while appealing to the general public, civil society, the media, and the international community at all levels to support the efforts and dialogue being made by all security agencies, including the Nepal Army, from their respective positions to maintain law and order in the country.

They have mentioned that it is necessary for all parties to present themselves with restraint and unity to move the country forward towards peace and reconstruction after the events that took place in the past two days. They have emphasized the need for everyone to be serious about the important responsibility of ensuring the path of the democratic system in a new way for the country's prosperity and beautiful future.

“This initiative should come to a conclusion in accordance with the spirit of Gen Z, and in doing so, we would like to remind you that decisions made in accordance with the principle of necessity can and should be taken forward through the legal path in accordance with the Constitution,” the statement reads.

The General Secretaries have said all possible legal measures should be adopted to prevent a long constitutional vacuum and void in the country, and a roadmap should be set to end this situation by seeking a solution through the Constitution and democratic means. 

They have drawn attention to the serious crime committed through excessive use of force on Monday's protest day by conducting a thorough investigation through a high-level commission and bringing the culprits to justice.

Stating that the arson committed in several government offices, media houses, commercial establishments, etc. is extremely sad and condemnable, they have said that this destruction was carried out in a planned manner by those who deliberately infiltrated the movement beyond the sentiments and declarations of the Gen Z protesters.

They have also committed themselves to completely reconstructing the Nepali Congress from the ground up as a party that engages in responsible politics in line with the aspirations and expectations of the youth.

 

Four held for robbing Bhatbhateni Supermarket

Four people have been arrested on charges of looting the Bhatbhateni Supermarket in Maharajgunj. 

The arrests were made today between 10 am and 1 pm, following the nationwide deployment of the Nepal Army and other security forces in response to the situation that emerged with two-day Gen Z demonstrations.

In a related incident, suspects involved in suspicious activities in the Dilli Bazaar–Narayanthan area fled upon seeing security personnel. 

Authorities confiscated Rs 232,500 and USD 2,500, which were abandoned by the suspects while fleeing, according to the Nepal Army.

In a press release, the Army also confirmed the recovery of one additional looted firearm, bringing the total number of weapons recovered so far to 32.

Furthermore, 26 inmates who had escaped from the District Prison in Dadeldhura have been rearrested. Security personnel also successfully thwarted an attempted prison break at the Central Jail in Dilli Bazaar, Kathmandu.

 

 

Flights resume at TIA

Flights have resumed at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA). 

The airport office has stated that the international airport, which was closed since Tuesday due to adverse conditions, has been opened.

The airport office has announced in a public notice that flights that were suspended since Tuesday due to adverse circumstances will be resumed according to the decision made this afternoon by the TIA Security Committee. 

Travelers arriving at the airport for a flight have been requested to contact their respective airlines to get information about the flight time before coming to the airport. They have also been requested to bring their official flight tickets and identification documents with them.

In the meantime, the private airline company, Buddha Air, has announced that its flight operations will commence from Thursday morning.
