Israel kills two Palestinians, including 16-year-old, in West Bank

Israeli forces have shot dead two Palestinians, including a teenage boy, during separate raids in the Jenin governorate in the occupied West Bank, officials say, with security camera footage showing soldiers shooting the boy at “point-blank” range, Aljazeera reported. 

The Palestinian Ministry of Health announced late on Saturday that Israeli forces shot dead Rayyan Abdel Qader, 16, after storming the town of Qabatiya. The second victim, 22-year-old Ahmad Zayoud, was killed in Silat al-Harithiya, west of Jenin.

Witnesses said Israeli troops had opened fire directly at Abdel Qader, the Wafa news agency reported on Sunday, and blocked emergency crews from reaching him, leaving him to bleed to death. Israeli forces then held his body, the Palestinian agency reported, according to Aljazeera. 

 

Russia criticises European moves to amend US plan to end Ukraine war

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s top foreign policy aide says that changes made by European countries and Ukraine to the United States’s proposals for an end to Russia’s war on Ukraine do not improve the prospects for peace, Aljazeera reported. 

“I am sure that the proposals that the Europeans and Ukrainians have made or are trying to make definitely do not improve the document and do not improve the possibility of achieving long-term peace,” Yury Ushakov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies on Sunday.

The US-drafted proposals for an end to the nearly four-year ⁠war, leaked to the media last month, raised European and Ukrainian concerns that they favour more of Russia’s wartime demands, ​and that US President Donald Trump’s administration could push Kyiv into conceding too much, according to Aljazeera. 

Nigeria says 130 kidnapped Catholic schoolchildren freed

Nigerian authorities have secured the release of 130 kidnapped schoolchildren taken by gunmen from a Catholic school in November, according to a presidential spokesman, after 100 were freed earlier this month, Aljazeera reported. 

“Another 130 Abducted Niger State Pupils Released, None Left In Captivity,” Sunday Dare said in a post on X on Sunday.

In late November, hundreds of students and staff were kidnapped from St Mary’s co-educational boarding school in north-central Niger State, according to Aljazeera. 

US pursues third oil tanker off the coast of Venezuela

The United States is pursuing another oil tanker in international waters near Venezuela, a US official told Al Jazeera, as Washington intensifies a pressure campaign against the government Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, Aljazeera reported. 

The operation on Sunday comes a day after the US Coast Guard seized its second vessel off the coast of Venezuela in two weeks, as part of a “blockade” ordered by US President Donald Trump.

The US official told Al Jazeera that the US coastguard “remains in active pursuit” of the vessel, which they described as being part of Venezuela’s dark fleet trying to evade Washington’s sanctions on the Latin American country’s vital oil sector, according to Aljazeera . 

 

PM Karki urges Nembang to speed up preparations for elections

Prime Minister Sushila Karki has stressed the need of holding the elections to the House of Representatives on the slated date for the peace and stability in the country.

During the meeting with a delegation led by then member of the House of Representatives, Suhang Nembang, at Singha Durbar on Sunday, the PM urged the delegation to make preparations for the March 5 elections without any doubt as the incumbent government was formed to hold elections. 

"We have been carrying out activities to conduct voting. We are here to establish peace and hold elections after unusual circumstances. We have become successful in establishing peace and the rule of law in a short time," she reminded, arguing that elections pave the way for sustainable peace and stability.

Similarly, Nembang wished PM Karki the success to hold elections, according to PM Karki's Private Secretariat.

PM Karki had enquired leader Nembang on the preparations to contest in the elections. 

In response, Nembang said he had been preparing for the elections. 

Extending best wishes to Nembang, Prime Minister Karki expressed the view that now youth should come forward. 

"The elections will be held at any cost. Be prepared. Youths like you should come to the fore and lead the country to ensure a meaningful change. The hoary leaders are unable to lead the present generation abreast with smart service and similar expectations. Their experience and advice can be helpful, but youth should be in the driver's seat. Youths have courage and energy," she underscored. 

In the meeting, Nembang drew the attention of the PM to intensify the reconstruction of highways and bridges that were damaged by landslides and floods in Ilam. 

PM Karki shared that Minister for Physical Infrastructures, Kul Man Ghising, had recently conducted an onsite visit there and the government was serious on this issue.

 

Ram Ashish Yadav elected Madhes Province Assembly Speaker

Ram Ashish Yadav of Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) Nepal has been elected as the Speaker of the Madhes Province Assembly.

In the election held on Sunday, Yadav got 72 votes from the seven-party alliance. 

Deputy Speaker of Madhesh Province Assembly Babita Raut Ishar announced the election of Yadav as the Speaker with 72 votes out of 96 province assembly members present at the meeting today.

Elected from Dhanusha Constituency no. 2 (B) from the JSP Nepal, Yadav was the Chief Whip of JSP's parliamentary party in the Madhesh Province Assembly.

 

 

Chinese ambassador Chen Song pays farewell call on Speaker Ghimire

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song paid a farewell call on Speaker of the House of Representatives Devraj Ghimire at his office in Singha Durbar today.

In the meeting, discussions were held on strengthening bilateral relations, expanding economic and development cooperation, among other issues.

Speaker Ghimire thanked Ambassador Song, who is returning to his country after successfully completing his term, and highly praised his contribution to strengthening Nepal-China bilateral relations, expanding cooperation in economic development, and reinforcing relations between the parliaments of both countries.

Referring to the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the establishment of Nepal-China diplomatic relations throughout the year, Speaker Ghimire said that the various programs organized by both sides in 2025 have lifted the bilateral ties to a new height.

He stated that Nepal and China have remained good neighbours, close friends, and reliable partners, clarifying that the bilateral relationship is progressing on the basis of the five principles of peaceful coexistence, mutual respect, cooperation, and understanding.

Speaker Ghimire reiterated that Nepal is fully committed to the One-China principle and expressed commitment not to allow any activity against China's interests on Nepali soil.

The Speaker appreciated the support provided by the Chinese leadership to transform Nepal from a landlocked country to a land-linked one. He also noted that regular visits and dialogues between Nepal-China parliamentary delegations have further broadened and strengthened bilateral relations.

Speaker Ghimire expressed Nepal's gratitude for the development assistance received from the Chinese government and emphasised that projects under the 'Belt and Road Initiative' (BRI) agreement and other development assistance projects should be implemented promptly.

Ambassador Song during the meeting expressed that China has given high priority to diplomatic relations with Nepal. He mentioned that during his tenure, significant progress was made in implementing the agreements reached during Chinese President Xi Jinping's visit in 2020.

Ambassador Song stated that although people-to-people relations between Nepal and China are strong, economic relations have not developed to that level.

He recalled that a Nepal–China economic cooperation and investment workshop was held a few days ago and many Chinese entrepreneurs have shown keen interest to invest in Nepal.

 

 

Nepse plunges by 19. 95 points on Sunday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) plunged by 19. 92 points to close at 2, 595. 10 points on Sunday. 

Similarly, the sensitive index dropped by 1. 96 points to close at 448. 26 points.

A total of 11,299,334-unit shares of 345 companies were traded for Rs 1. 47 billion.

Meanwhile, SY Panel Nepal Limited (SYPNL) was the top gainer today with its price surging by 9. 99 percent.

Likewise, Sindhu Bikash Bank Ltd (SINDU) was the top loser as its price fell by 10. 00 percent.

At the end of the day, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 4. 35 trillion.
