Ronaldo double drives Al Nassr to record 10th straight win

Cristiano Ronaldo scored twice as Al Nassr beat struggling Al Okhdood 3-0 on Saturday to become the first team in Saudi Pro League history to win their opening 10 matches, setting a new record and extending their perfect start to the season, Reuters reported. 

Ronaldo opened the scoring in the 31st minute with a close-range finish after a corner and added a spectacular backheel in first-half stoppage time to take his tally to 12 goals this season. The Portuguese forward now sits joint-top of the scoring chart alongside teammate Joao Felix, who sealed the victory with a late strike in second-half stoppage time.

The win keeps Al Nassr top of the table with 30 points from 10 matches, four clear of nearest rivals Al Hilal, according to Reuters. 

Arsenal respond to Man City challenge with narrow win, Villa remain in title race

Manchester City threw down the gauntlet for the second successive weekend and Arsenal proved undaunted as they kicked off their festive fixtures with a narrow 2-1 defeat of Brighton & Hove Albion to stay as Premier League leaders on Saturday, Reuters reported. 

City won 2-1 at Nottingham Forest with Rayan Cherki grabbing a goal and an assist to briefly move top of the pile.

But Arsenal, just as they had done last week by beating Everton after City's earlier win over West Ham United, were unwavering as captain Martin Odegaard scored his first goal of the season for Mikel Arteta's side, according to Reuters. 

HoR elections: PR closed lists to be submitted today and tomorrow

The political parties contesting in the March 5 elections to the House of Representatives are required to submit their respective proportional representation (PR) list of candidates by today and tomorrow.

The Election Commission has stated that all preparations have been completed for the schedule for political parties to submit closed lists for the proportional election system.

The parties will have to submit their closed lists for the proportional election system to the Commission today and tomorrow, Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said. 

He said that the closed lists for the proportional election system submitted by the parties on December 28 and 29 will be validated from January 4.

Following the validation, the Commission will ask the parties to reconcile, if any, of the lists from January 5 to 11. Spokesperson Bhattarai said that the final list will be published on February 3.

 

A total of 100 political parties have registered to participate in the proportional representation (PR) election. 

Only political parties that have registered will be allowed to submit their lists of candidates for the closed list today and tomorrow.

 

Mist and fog likely over Tarai today

Mist and fog shall prevail at most places over the Tarai region today. 

Likewise, the weather will remain partly cloudy in the hilly and mountainous regions of the country. 

According to an 8 am bulletin published by the Meteorological Forecasting Division, there is a possibility of light rain and snowfall at one or two places in the high hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi and Gandaki Province.

Later tonight, mist will prevail at most places over the Tarai region, with the weather remaining partly cloudy in the hilly and mountainous regions of Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Karnali Provinces and mainly fair in remaining hilly and mountainous regions. 

There is also a possibility of light rain and snowfall at one or two places in the high hilly and mountainous regions of Gandaki Province.

The Meteorological Analysis by the Division says that there is partial influence of westerly winds across the country.

 

 

 

RSP President Lamichhane, KMC Mayor Shah sign 7-pt agreement

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) President Rabi Lamichhane and Kathmandu Metropolitan City Mayor Balendra Shah have reached a seven-point agreement on various issues in the lead up to the March 5 elections to the House of Representatives.

RSP President Lamichhane and Mayor Shah signed the agreement this morning. 

According to the agreement made public over the social media, the movement against corruption and bad governance waged by the youths shall be owned, and the demands of the injured and martyred families will be appropriately addressed. 

Similarly, it has been agreed that Rabi Lamichhane will remain the central president of the party while Balendra Shah will be the prime ministerial candidate for the upcoming House of Representatives elections. 

He will be the leader of the parliamentary party following the elections.

The name of the political party and its election symbol will be that of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, and the party's office in Kathmandu. 

Issues such as involving youth in the party's organizational structure have been included.

Furthermore, the updated structure of the party following the agreement shall be registered at the Election Commission, while a call shall be made to all alternative political forces to join the RSP.

 

 

18.9 million voters to elect HoR members on March 5

A total of 18, 903, 689 voters will cast their ballots to elect  new members of the House of Representatives in the general elections scheduled for March 5. 

According to the final voter list published by the Election Commission, 9,663,358 men, 9,240,131 women and 200 other voters are eligible to vote in the elections. 

The final voter list has also been published on the commission's website.

Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai shared that the commission has decided to publish the final voter list on Saturday in accordance with Section 20 of the Voter List Act, 2073. 

In the elections for members of the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly held in 2079 BS, the total number of voters was 17.9 million. 

As a result, the total number of voters in 2082 BS has increased by 0.915 million compared to 2079 BS. 

Likewise, a total of 23,112 polling booths have been determined across the country at 10,967 polling stations for voters whose names are included in the final voter list to vote. 

A total of 75 more polling stations have been determined in this election than the total number of polling stations in 2079 BS.

 

Nine arrested in Italy for allegedly raising millions for Hamas

Italian police have arrested nine people accused of raising around €7m (£6m) for Hamas over more than two years, BBC reported. 

The money was ostensibly collected as humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians, a police statement said, but was instead sent to the militant group via a "complex fundraising system".

Alongside the arrests, police say they have seized more than €8m (£7m) in assets as part of the investigation, according BBC. 

Attack on Kyiv shows 'Russia doesn't want peace', Zelensky says

An intense Russian attack on Kyiv overnight shows Moscow "doesn't want peace", Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Saturday as he prepared for a fresh round of peace talks, BBC reported. 

Zelensky made the comments en route to Florida, where he will meet US President Donald Trump on Sunday to discuss a new 20-point peace plan agreed by American and Ukrainian envoys.

The 10-hour missile and drone barrage directed at Ukraine's capital killed two people and left 32 injured, local authorities said, according to BBC.
