Nepse plunges by 27. 54 points on Sunday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) plunged by 27. 54 points to close at 1,855.06 points on Sunday. Similarly, the sensitive index dropped by 5. 22 points to close at 362. 82 points. A total of 3,778,951 unit shares of 250 companies were traded for Rs 1. 15 billion. Meanwhile, Eastern Hydropower Limited was the top gainer today with its price surging by 9. 99 percent. Likewise, Ru Ru Jalbidhyut Pariyojana Limited and Peoples Hydropower Company Limited were the top losers with their price dropping by 10. 00 percent. At the end of the day, the total market capitalization stood at Rs 2. 68 trillion.  

Nepal and Gautam hold meeting, discuss formation of left government

CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairman Madhav Nepal and CPN-Ekata Rastriya Abhiyan Coordinator Bamdev Gautam held a meeting on Sunday. Gautam had reached Aloknagar-based party office to meet Nepal. It has been learnt that the duo discussed power sharing and possible left alliance. CPN-Ekata Rastriya Abhiyan Coordinator Gautam is in a campaign to unite communist powers. CPN (Maoist Center) Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal met Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba on Saturday morning and sought his support to become the prime minister. Dahal is also in constant touch with the leaders of UML and fringes parties to become the prime minister. Though the Nepali Congress has agreed to change the leadership on rotation basis but has made it clear that Dahal cannot be made the prime minister in the first phase.

EC distributes certificates to PR lawmakers (In pictures)

The Election Commission distributed certificates to the lawmakers elected to the federal parliament and province assemblies through Proportional Representation (PR) system. Chief Election Commissioner and Election Commission Secretary Gokarna Mani Duwadi distributed the certificates to the lawmakers amidst a program organized at the central office of the Election Commission on Sunday. The poll body distributed certificates to 330 lawmakers—110 of the House of Representatives and 220 of seven province assemblies. Seven political parties have got the recognition of national party in the House of Representatives.

Gold price increases by Rs 600 per tola on Sunday

The price of gold has increased by Rs 600 per tola in the domestic market on Sunday. According to the Federation of Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the precious yellow metal is being traded at Rs 100, 500 per tola today. It was traded at Rs 99, 900 on Friday. Meanwhile, tejabi gold is being traded at Rs 100, 000 per tola. Similarly, the price of silver has increased by Rs 10 and is being traded at Rs 1, 380 per tola today.

Mahanta Jagannath Das nabbed for forgery

Police have arrested Mahanta Jagannath Das of Matihani Temple on Sunday morning. He was apprehended on the charge of forgery. Das is accused of withdrawing Rs 6.6 million from a bank of Rupandehi by forging the signature of the deputy chief district officer of the District Administration Office.    

Rain, snow in offing, says Met Office

There will be partial to normal rain and snowfall in some places of the country today due to the influence of the low pressure system. There will be partial to normal rain in the mountainous areas of Province 1, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini Provinces, with a possibility of light snowfall at one or two places, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology. The weather will be generally clear in the rest of the places. Some parts of the Tarai are likely to have fog in the morning. With the possibility of temperature decreasing gradually in most parts of the country, the Department has requested all to take necessary precautions to avoid cold. Tonight, there will be partial to normal rain in the hilly areas of Province 1, Bagmati and Gandaki provinces with possibility of light snowfall at one or two places in the high hilly areas of the three provinces. According to the latest update from the Weather Forecast Division, the minimum temperature of Kathmandu Valley today is 7.7 degrees and the maximum is 19.2 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum temperature today has been recorded at Jumla, which is -4.1 degrees while the maximum temperature is in Dharan, at 24.2 degrees Celsius.

Nawalparasi begins preparation to protect people from cold wave

Preparations have been started in Nawalparasi (Bardghat Susta West) to prevent possible casualties from winter and cold waves. Following the onset of winter, the district disaster management committee has decided to carry out necessary preparations. A meeting of the committee led by Chief District Officer Shravan Kumar Pokharel with participation of people's representatives, political parties, security agencies and representatives of concerned agencies decided to endorse and implement Cold Wave Emergency Action Plan 2079. The cold weather in Tarai districts including Nawalparasi affects especially the poor, pregnant women, children and senior citizens and hence necessary preparations have been made to protect the target groups, said CDO Pokharel. It has been decided that the Division Forest Office will provide firewood at a minimum cost to arrange fireplaces in various places of the district to help people stay warm and ward off the cold. The committee has also decided to maintain a stock of warm clothes including blankets. Meanwhile, the media has been requested to publish and broadcast information about the measures to avoid the cold wave. Likewise, since there is risk of road accidents as a result of cold wave and fog, the transportation entrepreneurs have been requested to make mandatory provision of fog lights in the vehicles. Similarly, Chief District Officer Pokharel said that it has been decided to stick reflective tapes or stickers on students' school bags. Emphasizing that all parties should be involved in the preparedness to reduce the impact of cold wave, member of Lumbini Provincial Assembly, Baijanath Jaiswal, urged the local level governments and concerned organizations to prepare for any likely mishap and maintain stock of disaster rescue and relief materials.
