Sevilla stadium partially closed after fans throw objects in derby

Sevilla's Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan Stadium will be partially closed for the next three games after fans threw objects onto the pitch during their 2-0 loss to Real Betis in Sunday's LaLiga derby, Spain's football federation said on Wednesday, Reuters reported.

The disciplinary committee also imposed a 45,000 euro ($52,461) fine on the club following the incident, which delayed the match for 15 minutes when objects were hurled from behind the Fondo Norte goal.

Referee Jose Munuera halted the game and eventually led players off the pitch after the crowd failed to comply, according to Reuters.

Slot searches for positives as Liverpool drop points again

While Liverpool managed to salvage a point against Sunderland despite their lethargic performance in a 1-1 Premier League draw on Wednesday, the match felt like a setback after the champions' encouraging 2-0 victory over West Ham United last weekend, Reuters reported.

Florian Wirtz's deflected shot in the 81st minute spared Liverpool's blushes of what would have been a dreadful 10th defeat in their last 14 games across all competitions in a season of one step forward, several steps back for Arne Slot's side.

"Far too many times this season we don't concede a lot of chances but the ones that we do go in," a stony-faced Slot told the BBC. "We weren't lucky enough to get the win over the line, but in recent weeks we would have lost this game so that is a positive."

Arsenal go five points clear, Villa roar back at Brighton to go third

Arsenal re-established their five-point lead at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 home win against Brentford on Wednesday and for the second evening running the goals flowed as Aston Villa won 4-3 in a thriller at Brighton and Hove Albion, Reuters reported.

Mikel Merino's 11th-minute header gave Arsenal the lead but they needed a stoppage-time goal by substitute Bukayo Saka to make the points safe on a night of hard graft in which they stretched their unbeaten run in all competitions to 18.

Manchester City had cut the advantage to two points on Tuesday with a wild and wacky 5-4 victory at Fulham but Arsenal responded in calm fashion to move to 33 points from 14 games, according to Reuters.

Cristian Romero overhead kick snatches late Tottenham draw to deny Newcastle

Two late goals from Cristian Romero enabled Thomas Frank to leave Tyneside celebrating the sort of dramatic draw that can be construed as a form of moral victory, The Guardian reported.

The Tottenham captain’s equaliser in stoppage time, his second leveller of the scrappiest of games, not merely camouflaged plenty of visiting flaws but surely reinforced his manager’s recently fragile looking job security.

Equally importantly Romero showed precisely why he is an Argentina defender by helping the similarly impressive Kevin Danso to keep Nick Woltemade and co quiet as Newcastle were left hugely frustrated, according to The Guardian.
