After 836 days, Barcelona are at the top of La Liga table

It has taken two years, three months and 13 days for Barcelona fans to be able to proudly show off the LaLiga league table. The Catalan side are back at the top of the table almost two and a half years later, level on 19 points with Real Madrid, but lead the ranking by virtue of a superior goal difference, where they have a +18 difference compared to the +11 held by Real Madrid. The last time Barcelona were leaders was under Quique Setién and one has to go back to matchday 29 of the 2019/20 season, when the Catalan outfit had 64 points after beating Leganés 2-0, while Real Madrid were two points behind, 62, after beating Valencia (3-0). However, the following week, Barcelona drew (0-0) at the Sánchez Pizjuán, while Real Madrid recorded a controversial win at Anoeta (1-2) and the side from the capital topped the table with a better head to head having played both league games with Los Blancos going on to claim the title. Under Ronald Koeman, Barça never reached the summit of the table and the arrival of former player Xavi Hernandez has seen the Catalan club find the form they lacked under the Dutch coach. The first ‘El Clasico’ of the season is just two weeks away with Madrid travelling away to Getafe next weekend as Barcelona welcome Celta to Camp Nou. (All Football)

Real Madrid held by Osasuna, Barca rise to top La Liga standings

Real Madrid surrendered the leadership of La Liga to Barcelona after being held to a 1-1 draw at home by Osasuna on Sunday evening. Carlo Ancelotti's side slipped to second in LaLiga behind archrivals Barcelona on goal difference. Karim Benzema was back in the starting 11, while Andriy Lunin replaced Thibaut Courtois in goal after the Belgian had to drop out with a back injury. Madrid took the lead with a stroke of fortune and a dose of controversy in the 42nd minute when Vinicius Jr's cross went in at the far post. Osasuna players claimed offside as VAR rejected the visitors' appeals. Kike Garcia's second-half header gave Osasuna a deserved equalizer but Madrid should have won when they were given a 78th-minute penalty after David Garcia's push on Benzema. Benzema sent the spot kick against the bar and Osasuna clung on bravely until the end to take a point and end Madrid's 100 percent start to the season. (Xinhua)

City thrashes United in Manchester derby

Manchester City routed Manchester United 6-3 in the highest-scoring Manchester derby ever as Erling Haaland and Phil Foden each scored an impressive hat-trick. City were all over United from the start, dominating possession and creating chance after chance. Foden opened the scoring in the eighth minute, before Haaland found the back of the net twice after the half-hour mark. Foden added another before the break as United trailed 4-0 at half-time for the second time this season. United fans were seen leaving the Etihad Stadium at this point. Antony pulled one back for United early in the second half, but there was no stopping for City today. Haaland finished off his hat-trick in the 64th minute, becoming the first City player to score three against United since Francis Lee in 1970. Foden matched his team-mate's hat-trick with his third goal in the 72nd minute. Anthony Martial scored two consolation goals for United in the dying minutes, the second from the penalty spot, but there was no way back for United. City earned their third straight Premier League win against their cross-town rivals for the first time since 2014. They're also the first team to win eight straight top-flight home games while scoring at least three goals in each match since 1965. Erik ten Hag falls to a crushing defeat in his first Manchester derby. He's the sixth United manager in a row to lose their first league match against City, with Alex Ferguson the last to win his derby debut all the way back in 1987. (All Football)
