One held with automatic weapon from Supreme Court premises

Police have arrested a person with an automatic weapon from the Supreme Court premises on Monday.

He is Deepak Khadka of Buddhashanti Rural Municipality-3, Jhapa district, said Superintendent of Police Nawaraj Adhikari, the spokesperson for the District Police Range Kathmandu.

"Police personnel on security duty at the Supreme Court took Khadka under control as he entered the court carrying the automatic weapon and handed him over to us. Investigation is on in this connection," Adhikari said.

 

Maoist Center Vice-Chair Mahara taken to CIB

Former Speaker and CPN (Maoist Center) Vice-Chairman Krishna Bahadur Mahara, who was arrested in connection to a gold smuggling case, has been taken to the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police.

He was brought to Kathmandu after being taken under control from Bhairahawa on Monday.

Police apprehended Mahara while was heading towards Rolpa via Rupandehi.

He was taken to the CIB directly from the Tribhuvan International Airport.

Police are preparing to ask the Kathmandu District Court to extend the remand of Mahara to carry out further investigation.

Earlier, police had released Maoist Center Vice-Chair Mahara after recording this statement in the gold smuggling case.

Police took him under control after a high-level commission formed under the headship of former high court chief judge Dilli Raj Acharya to probe the gold smuggling recommended action against Mahara.

The commission had recommended action against 21 individuals including nine Chinese nationals.

The commission had also recommended action against 12 persons including former Speaker of the House of Representatives Mahara.

Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane submitted the report, presented by the commission on Thursday, to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Friday.

Later, a meeting of the Council of Ministers decided to implement the report of the commission.

Acting on the same, Home Minister Lamichhane directed the concerned security agencies to arrest the people involved in the gold smuggling.

 

 

Two killed in Myagdi jeep accident

Two persons died in a jeep accident at Nepane in Annapurna Municipality-4 of Myagdi district in the wee hours of Monday.

The deceased have been identified as vehicle owner and driver Ganesh Shrestha (37) and Lal Bahadur Tilija of Pauuddar, Purna Payeja, ward member of Annapurna Rural Municipality-5, said.

Police, however, are yet to officially confirm the incident and the deceased.

The incident occurred when the four-wheeler (Ga 1 Ja 7653) heading towards Pauuddar from Pokharebagar of Annapurna Rural Municipality fell some 200 meters down the road.

DSP Madan Kunwar of the District Police Office, Myagdi said that a team from Ghara and Bhurung has reached the incident site and started collecting the bodies.

He further said that police are investigating the incident.

 

Photo Exhibition on China’s Annual Sessions held in Kathmandu

A one-day photo exhibition entitled “Exploring Economic Opportunities: Nepal’s Development in the Context of China’s Economy” was successfully held in Nepal on Sunday.

The event organized by Friends of Silk Road Club – Nepal showcased major highlights of China’s Annual Sessions National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference 2024.

This year's Two Sessions had a particular significance as 2024 marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China.

Inaugurating the event, former Deputy Prime Minister and CPN-ML General Secratary CP Mainali stressed on the importance of the Two Sessions, and how China’s rise poses opportunity for Nepal, especially for economic development and prosperity.

Recalling the Chinese Communist Party’s history and revolution and how generations of visionary Chinese leaders have led their people to create unprecedented development miracles, Mainali mentioned that China’s rise could be inspirational for other countries including Nepal. He also praised China’s continuous commitment to promote common development of all nations.

He also took the occasion to suggest the Nepali parties and leaders to practice multi-party cooperation rather than multi-party competition.

On the occasion, Leela Mani Paudyal, former Nepali Ambassador to China, explained about major accomplishments of China's top legislature and top political advisory body. Stressing on how the northern neighbor has been promoting high-quality development, Paudyal suggested that Nepal can take benefits in multiple areas.

Sharing his experiences of witnessing the mega Two Sessions up close in the past, the former ambassador pointed out that there are immense possibilities for Nepal in the fields like renewable energy, science and technology, agriculture and tourism, among others.

He further expressed confidence that the Belt and Road Initiative will be instrumental in promoting Nepal’s economic progress.

Over 30 photos were displayed in one-day photo exhibition, held inside the Patan Durbar Square, and witnessed by people from different walks of life and general public.
