Landslides obstruct Karnali Highway

The landslides occurred at several places have obstructed the Karnali Highway. The Province Police Office, Surkhet issued a notice and informed that the landslides occurred at Maulakati of Kalikot Khadachakra Municipality-5 obstructed the highway. The landslides also occurred at Botkhola of Dullu Municipality-3 and at Ramghat of Chamunda Bindrasaini Municipality-7 of Dailekh district. However, the obstruction along the Surkhet-Dailekh roadway has been cleared by the police team.

Government takes back Electricity Bill-2077

The government has taken back the Electricity Bill-2077, which was under consideration at the National Assembly. The government withdrew the under consideration bill in accordance with Article 112 of the Constitution and Rule-116 of the National Assembly Regulations. The proposal presented by Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation for the withdrawal of the bill in today's National Assembly meeting was passed unanimously. On the occasion, National Assembly Chairperson Ganesh Prasad Timilsina announced the withdrawal of the bill from the National Assembly. The next meeting of the National Assembly will be held at 11 am on September 18.  

Prime Minister Deuba unveils trophy of 9th National Games

Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba has unveiled the trophy of the ninth National Games. At a program organized at the official residence of the Prime Minister at Baluwatar today, Prime Minister Deuba made public the 'National Game Trophy'. On the occasion, Deuba said that the government has been working for the establishment of Sports University in the country. Bemoaning that although the Nepalis are adept in sports, they are not getting their due, PM Deuba opined that Nepal is also a sports-lover country. Similarly, Minister for Youth and Sports Maheshwor Jung Gahatraj said that arrangement of trophy has been made for medal winner teams for the first time in the ninth National Games. Likewise, Member-Secretary of the National Sports Council Tanka Lal Ghising informed about the preparations regarding the National Games. He also shed light on the arrangement of trophy in the National Games to be organized in Gandaki Province from October 14 this year. The trophy would be taken to the venue of ninth National Games, Pokhara, after taking it to the capitals of all seven provinces and headquarters of the departmental teams, he added.

Training made mandatory for domestic workers going to European countries

The government has made training mandatory for the Nepali workers going to European countries as domestic help. The Department of Foreign Employment has made orientation training mandatory for such workers after it was found that some manpower companies were sending workers to Cyprus, Romania among other countries without imparting them the orientation. The Guidelines on Sending Domestic Workers in Foreign Employment, 2072 has provisions requiring that the workers to be sent for this purpose should be imparted at least 30 days' training before going abroad for employment. The Department has also directed the listed manpower companies to make arrangements for sending the workers on foreign employment only after compulsorily providing them the training in accordance with the Work Procedures on Domestic Workers Orientation Training, 2070.

Nepal Telecom distributing free e-SIM

Nepal Telecom is going to distribute e-SIM to its customers starting today. The state-owned Telecom Company is going to distribute free e-SIM from its counter in Sundhara, Kathmandu. Postpaid and prepaid customers of the company who are currently using 'physical' SIMs can be changed to e-SIMs for free, said NT spokesperson Shovan Adhikari. Customers will however need a mobile set that support e-SIM. Existing customers of Telecom who have mobile sets that support e-SIM will have to fill and submit the required form to get the e-SIM. Apart from mobile sets, e-SIM can be used in other wearable devices like smart watches.  

One dies of Japanese Encephalitis in Chitwan

A 60-year-old woman of Madi municipality-1 in Chitwan district died of Japanese Encephalitis. She died after returning home from the hospital. According to health office chief, Durga Dutta Chapagain, a total of nine cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been confirmed so far in the district. Of them, a woman succumbed to Japanese Encephalitis in the district. The deceased was admitted to Bharatpur Hospital on August 22 after she suffered from headache and fever. Out of 22 tests, nine cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been confirmed in the district. According to the office, four cases of Japanese Encephalitis have been detected in Bharatpur Metropolitan City, two in Madi Municipality and each in Rapti, Ratnanagar and Kalika Municipalities. The infection first was detected in the first week of August and JE cases have reached nine till September 3. This is probably the first time the district is tackling the situation to this level, said office chief, Chapagain. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Japanese Encephalitis Virus (JEV) is a flavivirus related to dengue, yellow fever and West Nile viruses, and it spreads by mosquitoes.

Air services in Baitadi closed for six months

Air service in Baitadi remained closed for the past six months due to bad weather and a lack of passengers, said the airport authorities. Earlier, the Summit Air had been operating a flight between Dhangadhi-Baitadi-Dhangadhi once a week (Thursdays), but its flight has been closed since March 24, said Krishna Dutta Bhatta, the contact person for the Summit Air. As a result, people have been affected especially at a time when Dashain festival is around the corner. It takes at least eight hours on a public vehicle to reach Dhangadhi from Baitadi. At present, the airline has been operating flights elsewhere at tourist destinations where there is the availability of passengers easily, he said. "The airline conducted flights at Lukla and Jomsom for two or three months. A plan was afoot to operate flights between Dhangadhi-Baitadi-Dhangadhi. But bad weather and a lack of passengers affected it," he said, adding that now, the flight between the routes would resume from the third week of September.  

Four former CJs not to appear before IRC meeting

The four former Chief Justices, who were named by suspended CJ Cholendra SJB Rana, have decided not to appear before the meeting of the Impeachment Recommendation Committee (IRC), citing that it would be against the professional integrity and the concept of independent judiciary. The Committee on Wednesday had decided, and sent a letter to former CJs—Min Bahadur Rayamajhi, Anup Raj Sharma, Kalyan Shrestha and Sushila Karki—and other sitting Supreme Court justices asking them to appear before the meeting to record their statements for investigations based on the statements given by Rana. "We sat down together and decided not to appear before the meeting. We already provided needful suggestions. We have decided that it would be against professional integrity and the concept of independent judiciary. We have provided our decision to the Committee," said Rayamajhi talking to Rastriya Samachar Samiti. The full court meeting on Thursday sent a letter to the Committee, saying that sitting justices could not be present before the Committee meeting. As a result, the Committee meeting that was scheduled for 8:30 am today was rescheduled for 1 pm today itself.
