Rain likely in three provinces
Light rainfall is taking place in a few places of Lumbini and Sudurpaschim Province. There is a possibility of heavy rain at a couple of places in Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces in the afternoon, according to the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, Weather Forecasting Division. According to the weather bulletin issued by the division, Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim Provinces will have normal to complete change in the weather while the rest of the provinces will have partial change in the afternoon. There is a possibility of light to moderate rain with thunder and lightning in some places of Lumbini, Karnali and Sudurpaschim provinces. The same weather system will continue during the night as well.
Candidates contesting upcoming elections to file nominations today
Candidates vying for the upcoming elections to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly are filing their nominations today. Nomination of the candidates contesting in the first-past-the-post system for 165 House of Representatives and 330 Provincial Assembly constituencies are being registered in the respective Office of the Returning Officers. According to the Election Commission, nominations can be registered by the candidate him/herself or by the candidate's representative at the concerned office of the Chief Returning Officer and Returning Officer from 10 am to 5 pm today. The election schedule published by the commission states that the list of candidates whose nominations are registered today will be published on October 9 from 5 to 7 pm, the time for filing complaints against the candidates is from 10 am to 3 pm on October 10, and the time for examining and deciding on nomination papers and complaints is on October 10 from 3 to 5 pm. Similarly, the draft list of candidates will be published on October 11 from 5 pm to 7 pm, the time to withdraw the candidacy is on October 12 from 10 am to 1 pm and the final list of candidates will be published from 1 pm to 3 pm on the October 12, election symbols will be provided to the candidates from 4 pm on the same day. The Commission has already established 165 election officers with 77 chief returning officers and 88 returning officers for the election to be held on November 20. Meanwhile, the commission has published the closed list of candidates for the proportional system of the election. According to the election schedule, the closed list was supposed to be published on October 9 from 5 to 7 pm, but it was published only today morning.
Dr Adhikari to contest from Chitwan-3
CPN (Maoist Center) has decided to field Dr Bhojraj Adhikari from Chitwan constituency-3. The constituency has fallen under the part of the Maoist Center in the seat sharing among the ruling coalition. In the previous general election, Chairperson of Maoist Center and former Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda had been elected from the same constituency. Dr Adhikari is the Chair of Federal Hospital in Bharatpur. He is expected to resign today before filing his candidacy. Dr Adhikari is the Central Secretary of Health Population Department of Maoist party.
NC leader Paudel contesting from Tanahun-1
Nepali Congress has finalized the candidates for November 20 elections to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly. In this regard, the ruling party has decided to nominate its senior leader Ram Chandra Paudel as its candidate from Tanahun constituency-1. Similarly, central member and former minister Shanker Bhandari as the candidate from constituency-2. It may be noted that the Nepali Congress has decided to make Pradeep Poudel its candidate from Kathmandu constituency-5.
2.9 million voters in Madhesh Province
There are 2.91 million voters eligible to vote in Madhesh Province in the November 20 elections to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly. Under Secretary and Assistant Spokesperson of the Election Commission Surya Prasad Aryal said that there are 2,910,023 voters in Madhesh Province. These are voters who have been registered in the voters list and will reach the age of 18 by November 19. Those who have reached the age of 18 and registered their names in the voter's will be allowed to vote for 32 members of the House of Representatives and 64 Provincial Assembly members in eight districts. Among the total voters, there are 1.33 million women and 1.57 million men and 66 other voters in the province.
Nepali sky safe: Tourism Minister Shrestha
Minister for Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation Jeevan Ram Shrestha has claimed Nepali sky to be safe. He said this in his address to the 41st general assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Addressing the general assembly underway in Montreal city of Canada on Wednesday, Minister Shrestha said that Nepal has made remarkable progress in aviation safety as per the ICAO-determined standards and recommendations, the private secretariat of the minister shared. Tourism Minister Shrestha claimed that Nepali sky was safe as the country had gained a higher score on aviation safety in comparison to the global standards. He reiterated Nepal government's commitment to make the aviation sector secure, reliable and qualitative. There was no alternative to air travel taking into consideration the geographical situation of Nepal, he said, adding the government was fully committed to make the aviation service more secure, qualitative and effective. Sharing that the Gautam Buddha International Airport had already come into operation and Pokhara International Airport was in the final phase of its construction, he said the government had laid emphasis on expanding air connectivity, up-grading airports and constructing new airports.
Dengue claims one in Chitwan
A woman died of dengue infection in Chitwan. The 40-year-old woman from Rapti Municipality-7 lost her life to dengue infection. According to the district health office, she was diagnosed with dengue in the course of her test at Maulakalika Polyclinic. She died while undergoing treatment at Chitwan Medical College, said Information Officer at the office, Ram KC. Earlier, a man aged around 27 of Ratnanagar Municipality-1 breathed his last due to dengue infection on October 19. As many as 743 people have been so far confirmed with dengue infection in the district. Among the infected, 459 are from Chitwan, 175 are from other districts and 109 unidentified. The office said that dengue infection was confirmed among 743 while carrying out tests on 4,449 people.
Chief Minister Pandey bereaved of mother
Chief Minister of Bagmati Province Rajendra Prasad Pandey has been bereaved of his mother. She was 87. CM Pandey's mother Manamaya Pandey breathed her last on Thursday. Manamaya died at Sitapaila, Kathmandu at 3 am today, said Chief Minister's personal secretary Umesh Rupakheti. The late Pandey is survived by five sons, including CM Pandey, CPN-UML leader Surendra Pandey and three daughters. Her last rites would be performed at Pashupati Aryaghat today, family sources said.
