India committed to improving ties with China, Modi tells Xi
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said New Delhi was committed to improving ties with Beijing in a key meeting with China's President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of a regional security forum on Aug 31, Reuters reported.
Modi is in China for the first time in seven years to attend a two-day meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), along with Russian President Vladimir Putin and other leaders from Central, South and South-east Asia and the Middle East in a show of Global South solidarity.
"We are committed to progressing our relations based on mutual respect, trust and sensitivities," Mr Modi told Mr Xi during the meeting, according to a video clip posted on the Indian leader's official X account, according to Reuters.
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrives in China’s Tianjin for security summit
Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in the northern Chinese port city of Tianjin on Sunday (August 31, 2025), Chinese and Russian state media reported, for a regional security summit that China hopes can counter Western influence in global affairs, CNN reported.
For the rare four-day visit to Russia's neighbour and largest trading partner, Mr. Putin arrived to a red carpet welcome, received on the tarmac by top-ranking city officials, a livestream of the event by Russia's TASS showed.
Ties between China and Russia are at their “best in history”, having become the “most stable, mature and strategically significant among major countries”, Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said in its report of the arrival, according to CNN.
Stoppage-time Fernandes penalty earns Man United nervous win over Burnley
A 95th-minute penalty from captain Bruno Fernandes earned Manchester United a thrilling 3-2 victory over promoted Burnley in the Premier League on Saturday, Reuters reported.
Looking to quickly forget their humiliating League Cup exit at fourth-tier Grimsby, United started well in front of an expectant Old Trafford crowd, the dominant hosts taking a deserved lead through a Josh Cullen own goal in the 27th minute
United's wastefulness in front of goal proved costly, however, as Burnley levelled early in the second half through Lyle Foster, only for Bryan Mbeumo to restore the home side's less than two minutes later, according to Reuters.
Atletico held at Alaves as winless start goes on
Atletico Madrid's poor start to the LaLiga season continued as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Alaves on Saturday, leaving Diego Simeone's side winless after three matches, their worst start in his 14 years in charge, Reuters reported.
Atletico languish 14th in the standings after taking two points from their opening three matches, having lost 2-1 at Espanyol and drawn 1-1 at home to promoted Elche.
Giuliano Simeone gave the visitors an early lead in the seventh minute, striking from close range after Thiago Almada's shot was parried by Alaves goalkeeper Antonio Sivera, according to Reuters.
Chelsea sign forward Garnacho from Manchester United
Chelsea have signed Argentine winger Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United on a seven-year contract, the Premier League club said on Saturday, Reuters reported.
A source close to United told Reuters on Thursdaythat United had agreed a deal worth 40 million pounds ($54 million) with the Club World Cup champions.
The 21-year-old Garnacho's sale value is the fourth largest for a United player after Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku and Angel di Maria, according to Reuters.
Shot-shy Newcastle held to scoreless draw at Leeds
New striker Nick Woltemade watched from the stands as misfiring Newcastle United were held to a 0-0 Premier League draw at Leeds United on Saturday, with striker Alexander Isak again omitted from the squad as he pursues a move to Liverpool, Reuters reported.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is hoping Isak's situation is sorted out before the transfer window closes on Monday as his team has struggled to find its rhythm, recording two draws and one defeat in their first three games and no goals scored away from home.
"I think we're really looking forward to that clarity in terms of what our squad looks like," Howe told Sky Sports after a disappointing draw on a wet evening at Elland Road.
"The noise around us, it couldn't have been easy for the players to handle that all through pre-season and at the start of the season, so I think once we have clarity on the squad, we'll move forward, and I'm sure we can do really well," he added, according to Reuters.
Bayern concede twice again but hold on for 3-2 win at Augsburg
Bayern Munich almost imploded in their 3-2 Bundesliga victory at Augsburg on Saturday, conceding two goals for the second consecutive match after going 3-0 up soon after the break, Reuters reported.
Bayern's back line looked vulnerable, just as it had in Wednesday's German Cup first-round win over third-tier Wehen Wiesbaden in which they conceded two goals and needed a stoppage-time winner to advance.
"We know what we have to work on," Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said. "It is true that we could have decided the game earlier today if we had scored five goals from the chances we created. The most important thing is that we are creating lots of chances, according to Reuters.
Anguissa nets late winner as Napoli down Cagliari
Napoli snatched a last-gasp 1-0 victory at home to Cagliari on Saturday as Frank Anguissa’s strike salvaged three points in a largely frustrating Serie A game for the Italian champions, Reuters reported.
Deep into stoppage-time, Alessandro Buongiorno picked out Anguissa with a precise ball across the box and the unmarked midfielder slotted home the winner.
After a lacklustre first half that produced few clear openings, the second period was also subdued, according to Reuters.
