UML knocks on SC’s door seeking restoration of HoR

The CPN-UML today filed a writ petition at the Supreme Court, seeking reinstatement of the House of Representatives (HoR).

Chief Whip of the UML Parliamentary Party in the dissolved HoR, Mahesh Bartaula, and Whip Sunita Baral jointly filed the writ petition at the apex court. 

The writ petition has demanded the revocation of appointment of Prime Minister Sushila Karki, the decision of HoR dissolution as well as all the decisions and appointments made after HoR dissolution. 

Chief Whip Bartaula mentioned that the writ petition has urged Karki's appointment be declared unconstitutional, stating that she was appointed to the post of Prime Minister against Article 76 and 132 (2) of the Constitution.  

Similarly, the UML has sought annulment of the decisions of appointments, oath and all government actions and decisions made by the President. 

 

 

Nepse surges by 5. 32 points on Tuesday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) gained 5. 32 points to close at 2, 655. 99 points on Tuesday.

Similarly, the sensitive index surged by 1. 39 points to close at 457. 53 points.

A total of 11,976,780-unit shares of 319 companies were traded for Rs 5. 82 billion.

Meanwhile, Jhapa Energy Limited (JHAPA) was the top gainer today, with its price surging by 10. 00 percent. 

Likewise, Joshi Hydropower Development Company Ltd (JOSHI) was the top loser as its price fell by 4. 96 percent.

At the end of the day, total market capitalization stood at Rs 1. 51 trillion.

UML registers party for HoR elections

The CPN-UML has registered the party for the elections to the House of Representatives (HoR).

CPN-UML Central Election Department Chief Niraj Acharya and other leaders today reached the Election Commission and registered the party for the elections. 

EC Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai shared that a total of 67 political parties have so far filed applications for party registration to participate in the HoR Member elections scheduled for March 5. 

The CPN-UML has already filed an application for party registration for the National Assembly elections slated for January 25.

 

 

Saudi Arabia's ambassador pays farewell call on President Paudel

Ambassador of Saudi Arabia to Nepal, Saad Nasser Abdullah Abu Haimed, paid a farewell call on President Ram Chandra Paudel at the Office of the President, Sheetal Niwas today.

During the meeting, they discussed various issues concerning the relationship between Nepal and Saudi Arabia as well as mutual interests and concerns, according to the Office of the President.

President Paudel thanked the Saudi ambassador for successfully completing his tenure.

 

Govt's responsibility is to maintain good governance, hold polls: Home Minister Aryal

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal has said holding elections successfully and creating a strong base for good governance is the first priority of the government.

Addressing the Lumbini Province-level Security Seminar held in Bhairahawa today, Home Minister Aryal mentioned that the government has been carrying out activities focusing on the elections and good governance. 

He suggested the provincial government prepare its security plan as per the election security plan passed by the Central Security Committee and implement it. 

"Political parties have taken looted arms and absconded prisoners as security challenges. We have recovered most of the weapons through special operation as well as most of the prisoners have also returned back to prisons," opined the Home Minister. 

Similarly, Chief Minister of Lumbini Province, Chet Narayan Acharya, laid emphasis on the need of boosting the morale of security personnel and civil servants. 

The Lumbini province government has been moving ahead by making a strategic plan to maintain good governance, he argued.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Federal Home Ministry and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Law of Lumbini province government.

 

Afghanistan says Pakistani airstrikes in east of the country have killed 10 people, mostly children

Afghanistan’s Taliban government on Tuesday accused Pakistan of launching overnight airstrikes in three eastern provinces, killing 10 civilians, including nine children, in a sign of worsening tensions between the two neighbors, Associated Press reported.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the chief spokesperson for the Afghan government, said on X that Pakistan “bombed” the home of a civilian in Khost province, killing nine children and a woman. He said additional strikes were carried out in the provinces of Kunar and Paktika, injuring four others.

Pakistan’s military and government did not immediately comment on the allegation, which comes more than a month after cross-border clashes erupted when the Afghan government claimed Pakistani drone strikes hit Kabul, according to Associated Press.

Russia launches strikes on Ukraine’s capital while US peace plan under discussion

Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv early Tuesday, striking residential buildings and energy infrastructure, according to video footage and local authorities, Associated Press reported.

A residential building in the central Pechersk district and another in Kyiv’s eastern district of Dniprovskyi were badly damaged, Mayor Vitalii Kitschko said.

Video footage posted to Telegram showed a large fire spread through multiple floors of the nine-story building in Dniprovskyi. At least four people were injured, said Tymor Tkachenko, the head of Kyiv city administration, according to Associated Press.

Woman killed in Kanchanpur wild tusker attack

A woman died after being attacked by a wild elephant at Syaule in Bhimdutta Municipality-14, Kanchanpur district on Tuesday.

DSP Sagar Bohara of the District Police Office, Kanchanpur, said that the deceased has been identified as  45-year-old Dhana Bista. 

Critically injured in the attack, Bista died during the course of treatment at the Mahakali Provincial Hospital.
