Taiwan to build air defence dome against 'hostile threats'

Taiwan will build a dome-like air defence system to guard against "hostile threats", President William Lai announced a day after his government warned that China is enhancing its ability to attack the island, BBC reported.

Lai did not mention China by name - but Beijing has long claimed self-governed Taiwan as its own and hasn't ruled out the use of force to take it.

Lai also said there was a "clear necessity" to boost spending - a likely reference to increasing Chinese incursions into Taiwanese waters and airspace, including military drills that simulate an invasion.

But defence has become a polarising subject in Taiwan, which remains divided about how the government should respond to the Chinese threat, according to BBC.

Vehicular movement along BP Highway to resume from Saturday

Diversions have been constructed on various sections of the BP Highway damaged by last week's floods, and preparations have been made for operation of vehicles from Saturday morning.

A diversion is currently being constructed on the Kavrepalanchok section of the highway by redirecting the river.

Senior Divisional Engineer of the Divisional Road Office, Bhaktapur, Suman Yogesh, said that by this morning, the 'track' had been opened from Chauki Danda in Namobuddha Municipality-6, Kavrepalanchok, to Chiuribas in Roshi Rural Municipality.

He said the plan is to open the track on the entire damaged section of the highway by this afternoon. "Once the track is opened, we will test it operating some vehicles after checking the condition of the road again, and the highway will be fully operational from Saturday morning," he added.

The floods from the Roshi River had washed away about four kilometres of road in the Roshi area. The construction of the diversion had started on Tuesday.

Yogesh shared that about two dozen machines have been employed from Thursday afternoon to night for constructing a temporary road.

Floods and landslides had damaged the highway at 17 different locations.

After last year's floods and landslides damaged the road in the same area, a diversion was constructed and the road had been made temporarily operational.
