Gaza faces famine, UN warns

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres has warned that Gaza is entering its worst phase yet in the continuing conflict, with the population risking hunger as a result of Israel's blockades and military escalation.

Israel has banned aid into Gaza for nearly 80 days, and despite a recent partial easing, Guterres said current aid levels are "a teaspoon when a flood is needed." He emphasized that 80 percent of Gaza is under evacuation orders or designated as a military zone, making humanitarian access dangerous and limited, as reported by UN News.

Local reports say Palestinians are struggling to access food and water, with aid insufficient to meet urgent needs. Since Friday, at least 76 more Palestinians have been killed, bringing the total to over 53,800 deaths and 122,000 injuries since October 7, 2023.

Russia launches massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine

Russia carried out one of the largest aerial assaults on Ukraine overnight, launching 14 ballistic missiles and 250 long-range drones, according to Ukraine’s air force. The attack injured at least 15 people and caused widespread damage in six districts of the capital Reuters reported.

Explosions were heard around the city as air defenses responded. Several apartment complexes were destroyed, and three people, including two children, required hospitalization.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy described the night as "tough" and called for fresh international penalties against Russia to encourage a truce.

The operations come after a string of Ukrainian drone attacks on targets within Russia, including Moscow, according to Reuters.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has called for cease-fire talks between Russia and Ukraine while opposing a European plan for further penalties against Russia.

Putin urges boost in Russian arms exports amid global competition

President Vladimir Putin urged on Friday for expanded Russian arms exports to help the country's position in the global military market. He stressed the necessity for increased state backing to strengthen Russia's military-industrial complex.

Since the outbreak of the Ukrainian crisis in February 2022, Russia's defense sector has prioritized domestic production, resulting in a decrease in international arms sales. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), Russia's proportion in global arms exports fell to 7.8 percent between 2020 and 2024, down from 21 percent in the previous era, due to sanctions and rising internal demand, Reuters reported.

Putin noted that Russia still has a significant portfolio of military export orders worth tens of billions of dollars from important countries such as India, China, and Egypt. He also emphasized the need of incorporating artificial intelligence into weapons systems, stating that future competitiveness in the global arms industry will be dependent on these technologies.

EU rejects Trump’s 50 percent tariff threat, urges respectful trade deal

The EU has reaffirmed its commitment to a fair trade deal with the US, following President Donald Trump’s threat to impose a 50 percent tariff on all EU imports starting June 1.

EU Trade Commissioner Maros Sefcovic said the bloc seeks a deal based on “mutual respect, not threats,” after talks with US officials. Trump criticized stalled negotiations and warned tariffs would not apply to US-made goods, hinting a major EU investment could delay action.

European leaders urged de-escalation and warned of mutual economic harm. Germany, France, Ireland, and the Netherlands endorsed ongoing discussions and a clear EU stance.

Trump, citing trade imbalances, has threatened a 25 percent tax on iPhones not manufactured in the United States. Markets fell in response, with US and EU indexes closing lower.
