19th Asian Games: Nepal thrash Mongolia by 273 runs

Nepal defeated Mongolia by 273 runs in the T20I match under the Asian Games on Wednesday.

Invited to bat first after losing the toss at the Pingfeng Cricket Ground in Zhejiang University of Technology, China, Nepal gathered 314 runs at the loss of three wickets in allotted 20 overs.

Chasing the mammoth target, Mongolia were bowled out in 13.1 overs scoring 41 runs.

Nepal's bowlers, Karan KC, Abhinas Bohora and Sandeep Lamichhane took two wickets each and Sompal Kami, Kushal Bhurtel and Deependra Singh Airi sent one each to the pavilion.

Earlier, Kushal Bhurtel and Deependra Singh Airi of Nepal made record runs.  Kushal Malla set a world record by smashing a maiden century off 34 balls.

He broke the fastest-century records by David Miller (South Africa), Sudesh Bikramashekhar (Czech Republic) and Rohit Sharma (India) All three batsmen had a record of smashing centuries off 24 balls.

Likewise, Deependra Singh Airi made another world record by smashing half a century in nine balls. Earlier, there was a world record in the name of Indian batsman Yubraj Singh who struck half a century off 12 balls.

Kushal Malla scored unbeaten 137 runs off 50 balls and Airi 52 runs off 10 balls to steer Nepal to the record win.

Likewise, Captain Rohit Kumar Poudel made 61 runs off 27 balls, Kushal Bhurtel 19 off 23 balls and Sheikh 16 runs off 17 balls.

Nepal will play their next match against the Maldives.

First day of Thunderbolts Cup concludes

Under the first Thunderbolts Cup sports festival, the group stage matches of football have started on Monday. In the under 16 category, GEMS School displayed a strong performance, securing a 2-1 victory against NIST School, Bhaktapur. Meanwhile, in the under 12 category, APF School emerged victorious with a commanding 8-4 win over NIST School.

In the group stage cricket competition that started today, LRI School dominated their matches, defeating both Manakamana School and Radiant School by eight wickets each. Similarly, Nepal Police School defeated Manakamana School by a big margin of 62 runs and Radiant School by 18 runs. Radiant School defeated Manakamana School by 19 runs. Meanwhile, Little Angels’ School defeated GEMS School by five wickets.

In the group stage of Basketball that began on 24 Sept 2023, GEMS School displayed their dominance with an impressive 41 points against Lord Light Academy’s six points. United School could score only 23 points against Radiant School’s 33 points. Similarly,Teresa Academy played a neck to neck match but were unable to score beyond 38 points against the LRI School’s 42 points. Sainik School played a thrilling match scoring 41 points against Sanskriti School but they failed to defeat them by only four points. Little Flower School, Jhapa comfortably defeated NIST School  by a huge margin of 36-08 points. Further GEMS  School continued their spectacle, scoring 45 points against Nisarga School’s 40 points. Similarly, Matribhumi School, Lord Light School, Sainik School, Ullens School,  and Little Angels’ School emerged as winners in their respective games on Monday’s events.

 

19th Asian Games: Sandeep Lamichhane, Sagar Dhakal leave for China

Rape-accused leg spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has left for China to play Asian Games on Tuesday.

Nepali national cricket team duo Lamichhane and Sagar Dhakal left for the northern neighbor at 12:30 pm today.

The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) said that Lamichhane left for China after the hearing of his case was postponed owing to the lack of judges.

Lamichhane even did not take part in the farewell program with the Nepali team due to the case.

As Lalit Rajbansi is injured and cannot take part in the Asian Games, the CAN has decided to send Dhakal in his place.

Nepal will play against Mongolia on Wednesday and Maldives on Sunday in the Asian Games.

 

Thunderbolts Cup 2023 kicks off

The inaugural Thunderbolts Cup-GEMS Sports Festival kicked off on Sept 24 at the GEMS campus, marking the commencement of an event set to see the participation of over 100 schools and more than 4,000 students from various corners of the country.

The Thunderbolt Cup 2023 promises an adrenaline-pumping competition spanning a diverse range of sports disciplines. From individual contests to team athletic games, it covers the spectrum with Football, Cricket, Swimming, Martial Arts such as Judo and Taekwondo, and popular indoor games like Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Futsal, and Chess.

The ceremony was inaugurated by the guest of honor, Dhruva Bahadur Pradhan, former Minister for Law and ex-Inspector General of Nepal Police (IGP). Pradhan underscored the pivotal role of sports in instilling discipline and character in individuals. Expressing his warm congratulations and appreciation to the GEMS family, he emphasized that while victory is a worthy pursuit, fostering friendship and peace should be equally prioritized in sports.

Among the other notable guests were Vishnu Gopal Shrestha, the founding president of Nepal Judo and Boxing Association; Pankaj Nembang, president of the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA); and Sitaram Shahi, Nepal’s pioneering swimming Olympian who represented the nation at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

The event’s theme, “Dream it, believe it, achieve it,” resonates with the vision and dedication of the GEMS School’s Sports and Co-Curricular Activities Department in orchestrating this grand competition, affirmed the organizers.

Adding to the event’s allure is the substantial reward of a cash prize totaling Rs 5,00,000, set to be bestowed upon the overall winners based on the total points amassed across various sports categories.

The primary objective of Thunderbolt Cup 2023 is to cultivate a robust sports culture and camaraderie among schools in Nepal, according to the organizers. They stated, “The Thunderbolt Cup 2023 promises to be a celebration of sportsmanship, teamwork, and unwavering dedication to fostering a promising enthusiasm for sports in the country. Sports enthusiasts and the like-minded community at large are invited to witness and participate in this extraordinary sporting spectacle, which is poised to leave an indelible mark in the annals of Nepali sports history.”

The events are slated to unfold over a span of 16 days, culminating on Oct 8.
