Trump pulls back on DC police takeover after court challenge

President Donald Trump’s administration has abandoned its attempt to seize control of Washington, DC’s police force after a federal judge pressed for compromise, Al Jazeera reported.

Trump had placed the Metropolitan Police Department under federal command and deployed National Guard troops, a move DC officials called illegal. A court deal on Friday confirmed Chief Pamela Smith would remain in charge.

However, Attorney General Pam Bondi ordered DC police to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, clashing with the city’s sanctuary laws.

Mayor Muriel Bowser called the intervention “unsettling” and warned that DC’s limited self-rule faces its toughest test in decades, according to Al Jazeera.

Israel kills at least 1,760 people seeking aid in Gaza since May – UN

The UN human rights office reports that at least 1,760 Palestinians have been killed while seeking aid in Gaza since late May, a significant increase from early August figures. On Friday, hospital sources said 44 people were killed in Israeli army attacks across the Gaza Strip, according to Al Jazeera.

The ongoing Israeli bombardment, particularly in Gaza City, has left thousands trapped with no safe escape. Gaza’s Health Ministry confirmed that one more child died of starvation on Friday, bringing hunger-related deaths in the enclave to 240, including 107 children.

Since the conflict began, Israel’s military operations have killed at least 61,827 Palestinians and wounded 155,275. In Israel, the Hamas-led attacks on October 7, 2023, resulted in over 1,100 deaths and more than 200 captives, Al Jazeera reported.

Melania Trump sends letter to Putin about abducted children

US President Donald Trump delivered a personal letter from First Lady Melania Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin during their summit in Anchorage, Alaska, White House officials confirmed on Friday. The letter, written by Melania Trump, highlighted the plight of children affected by the war in Ukraine, particularly those abducted by Russian forces—a matter Ukraine has labeled a war crime and a potential act of genocide, according to Reuters.

The officials did not reveal further details of the letter. Melania Trump did not accompany the president to Alaska. The summit, held at a US military base, lasted nearly three hours, but no ceasefire agreement was reached. The United Nations has reported that millions of Ukrainian children have suffered violations of their rights since Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.

Air Canada cabin staff go on strike, grounding hundreds of flights

Air Canada flight attendants began a 72-hour strike Saturday, the first since 1985, affecting over 130,000 passengers daily. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) called the walkout after pay talks stalled. Attendants seek compensation for time spent on the ground, beyond in-flight pay, Reuters reported.

Air Canada and Air Canada Rouge flights are suspended, though regional carriers continue operating. The airline offered a 38 percent pay increase over four years, which the union rejected. Federal officials have urged a return to talks, while businesses call for binding arbitration to limit economic impact.
