Dengue menace in Bardibas

The Bardibas Hospital of Mahottari has received 17 dengue patients of late. It is the increasing trend since last month, the Hospital said. Bardibas, the northern belt of Mahottari district, is suffering from dengue threat. It has alone recorded dengue among 13 persons. The neighboring Aurahi Municipality, and Mithila Municipality from Dhanusha district have also reported one case each, according to medical superintendent Dr Krishna Maharjan. This data is of Bhadra (mid-August to mid-September) month alone. In the previous month, there were only two cases of dengue. The people from ward 1, 2, 3 and 8 of Bardibas Municipality have reached hospital for the treatment. They were tested positive for dengue. The Bardibas Hospital informed that all of them were referred to Kathmandu hospitals as they were in serious condition. In the last five years, Bardibas has been at high risk of dengue. Although only a few cases were reported in the previous years, 2074 BS witnessed a terrible record- 827 persons got dengue in three months of the year. Lately, the dengue case is reported on a daily basis. In view of the increasing cases of the disease, Bardibas Municipality has begun a sanitation campaign in the municipal area. Mayor Prahlad Chhetri informed that a 'search and destroy campaign' against mosquito larva along with spraying of insecticide was put in place, he added.

Nepal to provide relief materials to Pakistan

Nepal has decided to provide relief materials worth Rs 20 billion to Pakistan, which has been hit hard by the floods and landslides. Issuing a press release on Monday, Spokesperson at Home Ministry Phanindra Mani Pokhrel said that the government was providing relief materials in view of the huge loss of lives and properties in the floods and inundation in Pakistan of late. The relief materials would be provided as per the decision of the Council of Ministers on September 6.  Nepal has also expressed tribute to those losing lives in the disaster, extended condolences to the bereaved family members, and wished speedy recovery to the injured ones.  

'Development should not dent natural asset'

Chief Minister of Madhesh Province Lal Babu Raut has said the ultimate goal of human development is happiness in one's life. Releasing the Human Development Report, 2022/22 in Janakpurdham on Monday, Chief Minister Raut said it was worrying to have growing stress in human life despite increasing development activities across the globe. The report has shown that one out of eight persons is living with mental stress, he reminded, adding that development activities had dented the natural atmosphere, which needs to stop. The Chief Minister said, "Development should aim not only at material progress but also at social transformation and conservation of ecosystem." The government has taken the report finding as useful for making future policy. The programme was held under the chairmanship of Vice Chancellor of Madhes Academy of Health Sciences, Dr Ram Kewal Sah. It was also attended by policy makers, development experts and civil society representatives.  

Nepali containers start getting approval to cross Nepal-China border

Containers waiting to get the approval to cross the Nepal-China border into Nepal in northern Tatopani point of Sindhupalchowk district for over the past one month have started getting the custom passage since Saturday. Containers bound to Nepal carrying goods targeting the Dashain-Tihar festival from China remained stuck at Sigatse, Nylam, Khasa and Lhasa. According to Tatopani Dry Port and Customs Office Chief Narad Gautam, three vehicles crossed the border to enter the country and three successfully completed the border procedures on Sunday. But perishable goods such as garlic and apples have already become inedible.  As Gatuam said, the containers are being permitted to leave for destinations with the completion of required customs and health protocols. It may be noted that Tatopani and Kerung points along the Nepal-China border were closed since August 5 due to COVID-19 lockdown in China. According to the Sindhupalchowk Chamber of Commerce and Industry, over 150 Nepal-bound goods-laden containers were waiting to cross the border since the lockdown. On Sunday, officials and the business community from the Trans-Himalayan Trade Association called on Foreign Minister Dr Narayan Khadha and urged him to ensure the opening of the border and help sustain their business.

Health Ministry to launch nationwide dengue control campaign

The Ministry of Health and Population (MoHP) has decided to launch a nationwide campaign to control dengue in view of rapidly growing cases in the country of late. Over 7,500 dengue patients have been reported in the country since its breakout recently, according to the MoHP. The MoHP wrote to the Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration so as to mobilize all 753 local levels to control the mosquito-borne viral disease. The 'Search and Destroy Larva' campaign will be implemented to find out places where mosquitoes larvae hide, and destroy them to prevent and control dengue, said Bhim Prasad Sapkota, Chief Public Health Administrator at the MoHP. Each local level will launch a drive that will encourage people in their locality to search or find the places where dengue-carrying mosquitoes lay eggs and destroy them. The drive will be launched for around 10 minutes every Saturday at 10:00 AM, shared Sapkota. Local communities and people's representatives will coordinate efforts to implement the campaign in each household every Saturday, according to Sapkota. All the health posts and health institutions are asked to send the details of the dengue patients to the Ministry's Epidemiology and Diseases Control Division.

Elderly man killed in Bardiya tiger attack

An elderly man was killed in a tiger attack at Madhuban Municipality-2 in Bardiya district. The deceased, identified as Jhotharu Tharu (61) of Ambarpur in the municipality, was grazing buffaloes in the local Kushminiya community forest when the tiger attacked him, said the police. Tharu, who had gone missing since Sunday, was found dead in the forest today morning. Following a police complaint lodged by the victim's family, a joint team of Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, Nepal Army, local government, Division Forest Office, Bardiaya and local people launched a search and found him dead. The body of Tharu was found in pieces, said the police.

Bagmati Province government ensures free blood transfusion service for needy

Citizens in the Bagmati Province will be provided blood transfusion services free of cost.  The Province Government has launched the service, as per the Blood Transfusion Service Operation and Management Working Procedure, targeting those people who can't afford it. Blood transfusion is medically one of the most essential services. The District Health Office, Chitwan has reached an agreement with the Regional Blood Transfusion Center, Bharatpur for making the free service available in the district. Office Chief Durga Dutta Chapagain and Nepal Red Cross Society provincial blood transfusion center president Gyanshali Neupane signed the agreement on behalf of their respective sides in the presence of representatives from three hospitals in the district. The Office Chief said that patients receiving treatment at Bharatpur Hospital, BP Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital and Bakulahar Ratnagar Hospital will be entitled to the free service. A patient meeting the criteria for free service will get 10 units of blood in a year. Besides, a dialysis patient and the one who needs frequent blood transfusions will get an additional 10 units of blood. The patient shall present documents to confirm s/he is the Province citizen, stating that paid service is unaffordable for her/ him.  In case of emergency cases, geography will not be a matter to get the service. The office has allocated a budget for the free distribution of 3,800 units of blood in a year.  The center takes Rs 850 as the service charge. There is a demand for around 150 units of blood in the district each day. The supply is not sufficient to meet the demand and it is adjusted by obtaining blood from neighboring districts, Kathmandu and Pokhara, The service is expected to be directly beneficial for patients from indigent community. Blood transfusion is highly required in accident cases, cancer and delivery cases.

National Assembly meeting postponed for Wednesday

The meeting of the National Assembly scheduled for 1pm today has been postponed for Wednesday due to a special reason. Secretary of the upper house of the Federal Parliament Rajendra Phuyal said that the National Assembly will now meet at 11 am on Wednesday. Secretary Phuyal said National Assembly Chairman Ganesh Prasad Timilsina fixed the new date and time for the assembly meeting.
