Sugar worth Rs 9 million confiscated
The Armed Police Force seized a huge quantity of illegally brought sugar in Nawalparasi (Bardaghat Susta West) on Wednesday. A joint team deployed from APF Nepal Harpur BOP and Maheshpur Customs Office confiscated 420 quintals of sugar from Ramgram Municipality and Pratappur Rural Municipality area in the district. The sugar worth nine million rupees was smuggled from India evading tax. The team impounded a truck (Lu 1 Kha 9871) with 420 sacks of sugar from Ramgram Municipality-5 and another truck (Na 6 Kha 2197) with 21,000 kg of sugar from Pratappur Rural Municipality-2, said Chief of APF Nepal No 26 Battalion, Belashpur, Rup Kumar Chhetri. He added that the two vehicles used to smuggle the sugar have been send to Maheshpur Customs Office for necessary action.
11: 37 am auspicious time for Bhai Tika
The Nepal Calendar Determination Committee has announced 11: 37 am as the auspicious time for receiving and offering Bhai Tika of Tihar festival. This year's Tihar festival is starting from October 22, Saturday with the observance of Yamadeepdan, the offerings of lamps to Yamadeva (the deity of death). The religious belief is that the celebration of Yamadeepadan will prevent the devotee from facing untimely death. Committee Executive Director Surya Prasad Dhungel said Dhantrayodashi (Dhanteras) should also be observed the same day. The Kag Tihar, the festival of crow, falls on October 23 and the Laxmi Puja (worship of Hindu Goddess Laxmi), one of the major celebrations of the Tihar festival, falls on Monday, October 24. The Gai Puja falls on October 25. Cows are worshiped with Hindu rituals on this day. We are observing the Solar eclipse same day, according to him. Gobardhan Puja falls on October 26. OX are worshiped on this day. The Newar community will celebrate the Mha Puja (worship of the self) on the same day. The day also marks the commencement of the Nepal Sambat 1143. The tika for this year's Tihar festival will be observed on October 27 and sisters and brothers exchange the Saptarangi tika (seven-coloured tika) on the occasion. Sisters put tika on their brothers wishing for their wellbeing and longevity and offer them special Tihar delicacies as well. In return brothers also give the Tika and gifts to their sisters. The Newar community will celebrate the Kija Puja (Bhai Tika) the same day.
4 killed in Taplejung tractor accident
Four persons died in a tractor accident near Mauwakhola Rural Municipality-4 in Taplejung district on Tuesday. Tractor driver Pasang Sherpa (31) and Furwa Sherpa (24) of Mauwakhola-5 and Sharmeela Sherpa (22) and Laki Sherpa (17) of the same family from Mauwakhola-4 died in the mishap, said Mauwakhola Rural Municipality Chairperson Bijaya Prakash Banem. According to him, all of them died on the spot. He said that the incident occurred when the tractor heading towards Kamsang from Power sub-station ofTellabung fell some 200 meters down the road last night.
9th National Games: NA retains top position with 185 gold medals
The Nepal Army's departmental team has continued to be on the top of the list in the 9th National Games underway in the Gandaki Province. As of Wednesday morning, the NA has won 88 gold, 58 silver and 39 bronze totaling 185 medals to remain atop in the list. The Nepal Police Club (NPC) is following the Army with 108 medals including 37 gold, 31 silver and 40 bronze. Likewise, the Armed Police Force (APF) has so far secured 31 gold, 34 silver and 55 bronze medals in the national games. Gandaki Province, the host of the national tournaments, has won 16 gold, 15 silver and 30 bronze while Bagmati Province clinched 15 gold, 28 silver and 31 bronze. The 9th National Games that officially kicked off on October 14 is concluding on October 20. Altogether 36 sports events were conducted in the national competition.
Jumla facing shortage of cooking gas, petroleum products
Jumla district has started facing shortage of cooking gas and petroleum products due to obstruction of Karnai Highway following incessant rainfall. Consumers have been facing difficulties due to lack of sufficient amounts of cooking gas and petroleum products in the market. Assistant Chief District Officer, Pramila Rijal, said the market has witnessed shortage of petroleum products following disruption of Karnali Highway. A team headed by Deputy Mayor of Chandannath Municipality Ram Devi Khadka and Assistant Chief District Officer Rijal had carried out monitoring of groceries and dealers of petroleum products after receiving the complaint of black marketing in the name of road disruption. Rijal shared that there is a stock of food stuffs and edible oil in the market which is enough for around two months. The team had carried out monitoring of 10 shops. According to the Road Division Office, Jumla, efforts are underway to resume the road as soon as possible.
Ninth National Games: Anish Thapa Magar wins gold medal in marathon
Anish Thapa Magar of Gandaki Province clinched the gold medal in marathon under the men’s category in the Ninth National Games being held in Pokhara on Tuesday. The Indian Army, Anish, is from Parbat district. He won the gold medal by completing 42.195 kilometer distance in 2 hours 22 minutes and 54 seconds. Similarly, Krishan Basnet of Nepali Army and Santosh Bikram Bista of Armed Police Force won silver and bronze medals respectively. A total of 18 players had participated in the marathon.
9th National Games: Jay Rani wins three gold medals, sets national record in long jump
Jay Rani Tharu of Tribhuvan Army Club of the Nepali Army has set a national record in women's long jump under the 9th National Games taking place in Gandaki Province. Jay Rani clinched the gold medal with a jump of 5.58 meters in the match held at Pokhara Stadium, Kaski. Earlier, Nisha Chaudhary of Lumbini Province had the national record with a jump of 5.47 meters. This time, Nisha won the silver medal with a jump of 5.49 meters. Similarly, Shila Chaudhary of APF Club of Armed Police Force received a bronze medal. This is the third gold medal of Jay Rani in this 9th National Games.
Nuwakot district receives ballot papers
The ballot papers required in Nuwakot district for the proportional system of election to the House of Representatives and Provincial Assembly arrived here on Monday. Chief returning officer Madan Bahadur Dhami has informed that 532, 000 sheets of ballot papers for the election arrived in the district. The number of the ballot papers sent by the Election Commission was verified and stored. Election officer at constituency-1, Tekraj Bhusal, said there are 120,752 voters in his constituency and 133,000 ballot papers were allocated for the election to the House of Representatives. Similarly, there are 59,459 voters in Province Assembly (A) and 66,000 sheets of ballot papers have been allocated while 68,000 sheets of ballot papers have been allocated for 61,293 voters in Province Assembly (B). After verifying the copies of ballot papers, they were stored safely with sealing. In constituency 2, there are 129, 000 voters, and 131, 000 copies of ballot papers were received for the election to the House of Representatives, according to Assistant Election Officer Indra Kumar Khadka. There are 59,453 voters under Province Assembly (A), and 59,521 voters under Province Assembly (B) for which, each has been allocated 67, 000 copies of the ballot papers. The verified ballot papers are sealed and kept under security of Nepal Police.
