Disney’s Kimmel suspension shows Trump’s increasing grip over media
ABC's abrupt suspension of talk show host Jimmy Kimmel under pressure from the Federal Communications Commission is the latest demonstration of the power President Donald Trump wields to bend media, entertainment and digital platforms to his will, as he uses political pressure to mute criticism and punish institutions he sees as biased against him, Reuters reported.
The move, which came after Kimmel's remarks about the accused killer of slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has jolted the U.S. media and entertainment industries and intensified free-speech fears as the Trump-appointed FCC chair Brendan Carr threatened to revoke broadcast licenses from stations that carry what he called "garbage."
Major media and tech companies are now controlled by Trump supporters or billionaire business leaders who lined up behind Trump during his inauguration, donated to his inaugural fund, or visited the White House bearing gifts. Billionaire GOP donor Larry Ellison’s Oracle is part of a consortium of investors with the inside track to take control of the U.S. operations of the video-sharing platform TikTok, according to Reuters.
Trump to return to UN as Gaza, Ukraine conflicts rage
World leaders gather in New York this coming week for a U.N. General Assembly dominated by U.S. President Donald Trump's return to the rostrum, war in Gaza and Ukraine, rising Western recognition of Palestinian statehood and nuclear tensions with Iran, Reuters reported.
"We are gathering in turbulent – even uncharted – waters," U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said a week before the 193-member world body hosts six days of speeches by nearly 150 heads of state or government along with dozens more ministers.
"Geopolitical divides widening. Conflicts raging. Impunity escalating. Our planet overheating," he told reporters on Tuesday. "And international cooperation is straining under pressures unseen in our lifetimes."
Israel presses on with Gaza City assault, at least 60 Palestinians killed
Israel’s military kept up its assault on Gaza City and the wider Gaza Strip on Saturday, dismantling underground shafts and booby-trapped structures in attacks that killed at least 60 Palestinians, according to Gazan health authorities, Reuters reported.
The assault came as 10 countries, including Australia, Belgium, Britain and Canada, are scheduled to formally recognise an independent Palestinian state on Monday, ahead of the annual leaders’ gathering at the UN General Assembly next week.
Israel’s intensified military demolition campaign targeting high-rise buildings in Gaza City began this week alongside a ground assault, according to Reuters.
US says $100,000 fee for H-1B visas will not apply to existing holders
The United States has issued a clarification to its new H-1B visa policy, saying that the new $100,000 fee for skilled workers will be levied per petition and will not apply to current visa holders, The Guardian reported.
The announcement on Saturday came a day after US Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick said it would be paid annually, and would apply to people seeking a new visa as well as renewals.
Lutnick’s comment prompted major tech firms, including Amazon, Microsoft, Meta and Alphabet, which is Google’s parent company, to warn employees with H1-B visas to stay in the country or return quickly, according to The Guardian.
Kane treble helps Bayern extend perfect Bundesliga start at Hoffenheim
Bayern Munich maintained their flawless start in the Bundesliga by beating Hoffenheim 4-1 away on Saturday after Harry Kane netted two penalties to bag his ninth hat-trick for the club, Reuters reported.
Vincent Kompany made five changes to the team that beat Chelsea in their midweek Champions League opener and 17-year-old winger Lennart Karl, handed his first start, assisted the opener when Kane scored for the league leaders from his corner.
Kane doubled the advantage early in the second half with a penalty after a handball before completing his treble with another spot-kick after substitute Michael Olise was fouled, according to Reuters.
Militao and Mbappe strike as Real Madrid maintain perfect start
Real Madrid maintained their flawless start to the LaLiga season with a 2-0 victory over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Saturday courtesy of goals from Eder Militao and Kylian Mbappe in each half, handing their rivals their first defeat of the campaign, Reuters reported.
The result sees Real Madrid sit comfortably atop the standings on 15 points after five matches, five clear of Espanyol and Barcelona, with the reigning champions having a game in hand ahead of their clash with Getafe on Sunday.
Centreback Militao opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with a stunning strike from 30 metres, his thunderous right-footed effort leaving Espanyol keeper Marko Dmitrovic no chance as it flew into the top-left corner, according to Reuters.
Toothless Wolves in need of lift after worst ever league start
Wolverhampton Wanderers’ worst start to a league season in the club’s history was compounded by Saturday’s dismal 3-1 home loss to Leeds United and striker Jorgen Strand Larsen believes they are in desperate need of a change in mentality, Reuters reported.
Wolves have lost all five league games in the Premier League this season but made a promising start against struggling Leeds when Ladislav Krejci gave them an eighth-minute lead.
But goals from Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Anton Stach and Noah Okafor before halftime sent boos ringing around Molineux Stadium at the break, and at the final whistle, as the home side were unable to find a way back into the game, according to Reuters.
Gloom deepens at West Ham as loss to Crystal Palace follows protests
West Ham United fans staged demonstrations against the club’s owners before their home Premier League derby against Crystal Palace on Saturday and a 2-1 defeat at the London Stadium only added to the early-season gloom at the club.
West Ham’s fourth defeat in five games left them third from bottom and with manager Graham Potter under increasing pressure.
Since being appointed as Julen Lopetegui’s successor in January, Potter has overseen only six league wins from 25 games.
By the final whistle there were swathes of empty seats and the cheers of the Palace fans was in marked contrast to the dejection of the home fans who had stayed to the end.
