Arsenal get title boost as Man City and Villa both drop points
Arsenal's Premier League title prospects were enhanced without them even kicking a ball on Wednesday as their closest challengers Manchester City and Aston Villa both dropped points, Reuters reported.
Erling Haaland scored his 150th goal for City as he put them in front against Brighton and Hove Albion from the penalty spot but Kaoru Mitoma equalised for the visitors on the hour with the game finishing 1-1.
It was the third successive draw for stuttering City who were held by Sunderland on New Year's Day and by Chelsea at the weekend when they also conceded an equaliser, according to Reuters.
Sesko double but Man United held to 2-2 draw at lowly Burnley
Manchester United's Benjamin Sesko scored twice as his team kicked off the post‑Ruben Amorim era with a familiar sense of frustration in a 2-2 Premier League draw at lowly Burnley on Wednesday, Reuters reported.
United, with interim manager Darren Fletcher in charge, would have climbed to fourth in the table with a win but slipped to seventh on 32 points after a third consecutive draw. Burnley are 19th, eight points adrift of safety.
United looked headed for victory before Burnley substitute Jaidon Anthony struck the equaliser against the run of play in the 66th minute, capitalising on lackadaisical defending to launch a blistering shot from the edge of the penalty area, according to Reuters.
EC allows complaint filing against National Assembly candidates today
Any complaints against candidates, who have filed their nominations for the National Assembly member election to be held on January 25 can be filed today, according to the election program made public by the Election Commission.
The registration of candidates' nomination papers was completed peacefully at the offices of the election officers in all seven provincial capitals on Wednesday, shared the Commission's Joint Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai.
According to the election program, the nomination papers and complaints, if any, shall be examined and the list of candidates will be published on January 9 and 10, the candidates will withdraw their names and publish the final list of candidates on January 11, and the election symbols will be given to the candidates on January 12.
Venezuela's interim leader sacks general in charge of Maduro's guard
The general in command of Venezuela's presidential honour guard, Javier Marcano Tábata, has been sacked days after Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was seized by US forces in a raid in Caracas and taken to New York to stand trial on narco-terrorism charges, BBC reported.
The presidential honour guard is the military force which provides the bodyguards tasked with protecting the head of state.
While the Venezuelan government has not yet provided a detailed breakdown of casualties, members of the guard are thought to be among the dozens of people killed in the US operation to seize Maduro, according to BBC.
Violent clashes reported as Iran protests spread to more areas
There were violent clashes between anti-government protesters and security forces in several locations in Iran on Wednesday, as a wave of unrest sparked by the country's economic crisis continued for an 11th day, BBC reported.
Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, which is close to the Revolutionary Guards, said two policemen were shot and killed by armed individuals in the south-western town of Lordegan.
Videos posted on social media showed a tense stand-off between protesters and security forces, with the sound of gunfire in the background, according to BBC.
US seizes two 'shadow fleet' tankers linked to Venezuelan oil
The United States says it has seized two tankers linked to Venezuelan oil exports in "back-to-back" operations in the North Atlantic and the Caribbean, BBC reported.
US forces boarded the Russian-flagged Marinera after a pursuit lasting almost two weeks as it travelled through the waters between Iceland and Scotland. The UK Royal Navy gave logistical support by air and sea.
A second tanker - the M/T Sophia - was accused by the US of "conducting illicit activities" and boarded in the Caribbean, according to BBC.
Cambodia extradites alleged scam mastermind to China after arrest
Cambodia says it has extradited to China a billionaire businessman accused of masterminding a vast cryptocurrency scam in which trafficked workers were lured to forced labour camps to defraud victims globally, BBC reported.
Chen Zhi was among three Chinese nationals arrested on 6 January after a joint investigation into transnational crime lasting several months, Cambodia said.
The US charged the 37-year-old, who was born in south-east China, last October with running internet scams from Cambodia that it said had stolen billions in cryptocurrency, according to BBC.
Energy Minister Kulman Ghising resigns
Minister for Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation, Physical Infrastructure and Transport and Urban Development Kulman Ghising tendered his resignation on Wednesday.
He submitted the resignation letter to Prime Minister Sushila Karki this evening.
Accepting the letter, Prime Minister Karki congratulated and thanked Ghising for efficient leadership of three important ministries for three and a half months.
She also wished him greater success in his future political endeavors.
Minister Ghising also expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister for providing him with the opportunity to work during this interim period.
