Floods and landslides kill 10 in northern Vietnam

Heavy rains from Thursday to Friday triggered floods and landslides in Vietnam’s Dien Bien and Son La provinces, leaving 10 dead and four injured.

In Dien Bien, all 10 victims were confirmed after two missing people were found. Nearly 300 houses were damaged or affected. In Son La, several homes were destroyed, and villages were cut off due to collapsed roads, Al Jazeera reported.

Rescue teams are in action, and the government has approved $9.5m in aid for recovery.

International conference on climate change on Aug 18-19

Speaker Devraj Ghimire has informed that an international conference on climate change would be organized on August 18-19 to draw global attention on the impact of climate change in Nepal.    

Speaker Ghimire shared it at a news conference held at Tribhuvan International Airport upon his arrival from Switzerland. The Speaker returned home on Sunday after attending the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliaments in Geneva, Switzerland. He also informed that discussion was held on organizing similar event- on impact of climate change in Asia Pacific region- coming January 30-31. "The Conference was informed about Nepali lawmakers' preparation to hold the significant event," he shared.    

Ghimire had left here on July 27 to attend the 'Sixth World Conference of the Speakers of Parliaments' organized by the IPU in collaboration with the United Nations in Geneva.    

The event was organized from July 30 to August 2. During his stay, Speaker Ghimire had bilateral meetings with counterparts from various countries, including UK, Switzerland, Malta, Israel and Bhutan.(RSS)

No issue raised on leadership option in Maoist Centre, Spokesperson Sapkota

Most of the leaders who shared their views at the ongoing standing committee meeting of the CPN (Maoist Centre) have backed the party leadership and called for making the leadership efficient and strong.    

CPN (Maoist Centre) Spokesperson Agni Prasad Sapkota said that no one has put views on seeking an option to Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' as the party chairman.    

The SC meeting of the Maoist Centre that kicked off on Friday at the party headquarters is ongoing.    

Sapkota shared that most of the SC members said that the time has not come to seek an option to the party leadership.    

Spokesperson Sapkota shared that the SC meeting would take place on Monday as well.    

CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairman Prachanda, senior vice-chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha and general secretary Dev Prasad Gurung would share their views on Monday, Sapkota said. (RSS)

Rains elates drought-hit Madhes

To a much relief to the drought-hit Madhes province, the rainfall occurred well in the last 24 hours. The farmers welcomed the rains, cultivated land, and transplanted paddy seedlings on Sunday.    

Although the eastern belt of country witnessed adequate rains, the Tarai region had light to moderate rainfall in the last 24 hours, said the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, adding that the eastern Tarai did paddy plantation with the adequate rains.    

Meteorologist at Weather Forecasting Division, Binu Maharjan, informed that the Tarai region had the rainfall because the low pressure belt of monsoon was on the northern side of its average range- towards Nepal. However, there is cloudy weather across the country and rainfall was partial.    

The Anarmani Birta Station of Jhapa district recorded the rainfall at 151.6 ML in the last 24 hours.    

Some places in most of the provinces saw heavy rainfall during the day on Sunday. Currently, the rainfall is occurring in Koshi and Madhes provinces.

Defiant of constitution and democratic system obstructing parliament: PM

Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has asserted that the defiant of the Constitution and democratic system are obstructing the House sessions.     

Launching a book 'Democracy and People's Verdict: Electoral History of Nepal' authored by former Chief Election Commissioner Surya Prasad Shrestha today, PM Oli dubbed the tendency to ruin the system being part of it as anarchic and anti-democratic.     

He was referring to the consistent obstruction and boycotting of the House of Representatives (HoR) by the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP).     

He however admitted the need of fixing weaknesses seen in the process of the implementation of democratic system.     

"The government is responsible accountable to the people in democratic system. In this system, the government is not a ruler but a manager and server", the PM argued, claiming that their mission was good governance and prosperity.     

He ruled out the essence of law if no one turns anarchic.     

PM Oli defended the remarks of speakers who argued that Nepal's electoral system is expensive and candidates have been spending huge sum of money in elections.     

At the programme, Prof Dr Bipin Adhikari, Mohana Ansari and Dr Gopal Krishna Shivakoti had reviewed the book.(RSS)

Jeanine Pirro confirmed as US attorney for Washington, DC

US Senate has confirmed former Fox News host and longtime prosecutor Jeanine Pirro as the top federal prosecutor in Washington, DC, in a 50–45 vote.

Pirro replaces Edward Martin Jr., whose nomination was withdrawn after backlash over his support for Capitol rioters. A former judge and district attorney in New York, Pirro brings decades of legal experience to the role. She previously co-hosted Fox’s The Five and hosted Justice with Judge Jeanine for 11 years, BBC reported.

Smoke from Canadian wildfires chokes US Midwest

Wildfire smoke from Canada has triggered air quality alerts across parts of the US Midwest, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Michigan, Iowa, and nearby states.

Minneapolis reported some of the world’s worst air pollution, with the air quality reaching unhealthy levels. The smoke is expected to linger through the weekend, posing health risks for vulnerable groups, Reuters reported.

Canada is battling over 700 active wildfires, with several burning out of control. Authorities warn poor air quality may persist into Sunday.

Five injured in Aabukhaireni bus accident

Five people have been injured in a bus accident on the way from Gorkha to Chitwan. Ward Chairperson Dinesh KC informed that five people on the bus were injured when the bus number Ga 2 Kha 1077 fell about 15 meters down from the Ainapahara in Aanbukhaireni Rural Municipality-2 of Tanahun around 4 pm on Sunday.

According to KC, 40-year-old Sunu Thapa of Sahidalkhan Rural Municipality-6, 43-year-old Sita Thapa of Sahid Lakhan-6 Raniswar, 28-year-old Meena Thapa Magar of the same place, 54-year-old San Bahadur Gurung of Gorkha Municipality-9 and 8-year-old Khushi Ram Ramdam of Giranchaur in Aanbukhaireni Rural Municipality-1 have been injured. According to KC, Sunu, who is in a serious condition, has been referred to Bharatpur for treatment.
