Nepal enters Top 40 of Miss World

Miss Nepal World 2020 Namrata Shrestha has entered the ‘Top 40’ of Miss World 2021. The final of the pageant has been rescheduled for 16 March 2022 in Puerto Rico after being put off in December 2021 due to the Covid-19 risk.

Shrestha had also entered the Top 10 of the ‘beauty with a purpose’ round back in December. This time too, she entered the Top 20 as one of the ‘15 fast track winners’. Writes Shrestha in her Instagram, “As we have been told from Day 1, “We all are winners” WE ARE!!! To my sisters chosen to advance further in the pageant yesterday, a big congratulations, I can’t wait to reunite with you all in Puerto Rico this March!”

Nepse plunges by 38.42 points on Wednesday

The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) index plunged by 38.42 points to close at 2,776.65 points on Wednesday.

Similarly, the sensitive index fell 6.60 points to reach 518.34 points.

A total of 9,358,700 units of shares of 233 companies were traded for Rs 4.31billion.

In today’s market, all sub-indices saw red with Life Insurance leading the way with a decline 277.65 points followed by Non-Life Insurance with 142.54 points.

At the end of the day, total market capitalisation stood at Rs 3.92 trillion.

Meanwhile, Wean Nepal Laghubitta Bittiya Sanstha Limited was the top gainer for today, with its price surging by 10.00 percent. Pokhara Finance Limited was the top loser as its price fell by 5.59 percent.

Nepal Bankers’ Association says crypto, virtual currency, network marketing illegal in Nepal

Nepal Bankers’ Association, the umbrella organisation of the commercial banks, has said that crypto, virtual currency and network marketing business and transactions are illegal in Nepal.

Issuing a notice on Wednesday, the Association urged the people not to involve in the transactions related to virtual currency and networking as these are illegal in Nepal.

It warned of action as per the existing laws against any individual or institution found involved in such activities.

Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the country’s Central Bank, on January 29, had also warned of action against those found involved in virtual currency and networking transactions. It is said transactions of cryptocurrency and illegal networking transactions such as Networking Hyper Fund, Jocial, Crowd1, SolMax Global etc are found taking place in Nepal in recent days.

The Department of Revenue Investigation on Tuesday filed a case against four people including three members of the same family for their involvement in these illegal transactions. It has claimed more than Rs 370 million from them. RSS

Nepal’s population reaches 29. 1 million

Nepal’s population has reached 29.1million as per the preliminary results of the National Census 2021.

A report made public today by the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) under the National Planning Commission shows that the population is less by around 800 thousand than the projected population of 30 million. It is stated that this data might be slightly changed in the final results.

The population of Nepal as per the 2011 National Census was 26 million 940 thousand 504.

As compared to the previous census, Bhaktapur has the highest population growth rate while Ramechhap district has the most declining rate of population.

The first phase of fieldwork of the 2021 Census was carried out from September 15 to October 4 and the second phase of fieldwork was done from November 11 to 17, 2021.

Province-wise, Madhes Province has the largest population while Karnali Province has the least.

NPC Vice Chairman Dr Bishwonath Poudel expressed all those involved in making the National Census 2021 successful and the preliminary results show that Nepal is the heartbeat of over 29.1 million Nepali.

CBS Director-General Nebin Lal Shrestha said they conducted the population census of Lipulek, Kalapani and Limpiyadhura, the territories included in the new administrative map of Nepal, as well and the detailed information was awaited.

To a journalist’s question, Director-General Shrestha said it is found that discrimination between son and daughter is decreasing and the population might not have increased as projected also because the trend of producing children in preference of son has minimized.

73rd Republic Day of India marked

The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu celebrated the 73rd Republic Day of India amidst a function on January 26.

Indian Ambassador to Nepal Vinay Mohan Kwatra hoisted the national flag and read out the message of President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion.

The Ambassador felicitated war widows and relatives of the deceased soldiers by disbursing their dues of NRs. 6.35 crore and blankets, according to a press statement issued by Embassy. 

The celebration was part of ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ which is an initiative of the Government of India to celebrate 75 years of India’s independence and remarkable achievements by Indians in all spheres of human endeavor, the statement says. 

As part of the celebrations, many events will be held throughout the year and till August 2023.

In order to mark  75 years of diplomatic relation between two countries, it is planned to inaugurate 75 development projects implemented with India’s assistance across the provinces and districts of Nepal this year. The Embassy has also planned to gift 75 ambulances and school buses to various organizations and local authorities across Nepal.

Lumbini Province Assembly member among 2 injured in jeep accident

Two persons including a member of the Lumbini Province Assembly were injured when a jeep they were travelling in met with an accident near Kalakate of Gadhawa Rrural Municipality on Wednesday.

According to Mukuda Prasad Rijal, spokesperson at the District Police Office, Dang, Province Assembly member Tulsi Chaudhary was injured in the incident.  The identity of the other person injured in the incident is yet to be established.

They were heading towards Dang to take part in the National Assembly elections when the mishap took place.

They have been taken to the Bhalubhang Hospital for treatment.

The incident occurred when the jeep (Ba 2 Jha 3444) hit a truck coming from the opposite direction this morning.

 

Janamat Party cadres vandalize Mayor Prasain’s vehicle in Janakpur

Janamat Party cadres vandalized a vehicle of people’s representatives in Janakpur on Wednesday.

The cadres, who have been staging demonstrations in various places of Janakpur since this morning, vandalized the vehicle in which Mayor Ganesh Prasad Prasai and Deputy Mayor Ranu Paudel of Hariban Municipality were traveling in.

The incident occurred when they were heading towards the voting center to cast their vote in the elections to the National Assembly. Mayor Prasain sustained minor injuries in the incident.
