Wildfire near Los Angeles triggers evacuations amid heat

The Canyon Fire, sparked Thursday near the Ventura-Los Angeles county border, quickly grew to over 5,000 acres, forcing thousands to evacuate. About 28 percent of the fire is contained, with 400 firefighters battling the blaze as it spreads east toward Castaic, according to BBC.

Residents in nearby areas like Santa Clarita are urged to heed evacuation orders and stay alert as temperatures rise toward 100°F (38°C). A firefighter was seriously injured Friday night in an accident while on duty.

The Canyon Fire is one of several burning across California, where hotter, drier conditions linked to climate change have made wildfires more frequent and severe. Earlier this year, the deadly Eaton Fire near Los Angeles killed 31 people, BBC reported.
