Cambodia and Thailand begin peace talks as fighting continues

Leaders of Thailand and Cambodia are holding peace talks in Malaysia as a deadly border conflict enters its fifth day. Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet called for an “immediate ceasefire,” while Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai urged Cambodia to show “genuine intent” to de-escalate tensions, BBC reported.

At least 33 people have been killed and thousands displaced since the violence began on July 24. The talks follow a call from US President Donald Trump, urging both nations to halt hostilities as a condition for progressing in trade negotiations with Washington.

The long-running dispute stems from century-old border demarcations dating back to the French colonial era, according to BBC.
