Customs agent among 6 arrested in connection with around 100 kg gold seizure case

The Revenue Investigation Department has arrested six persons so far in connection with around 100 kg gold seizure case.

The suspects have been identified as Ram Kumar Bhujel (53) of Swoyambhu, Kathmandu, Dilip Bhujel (21) of Melung Rural Municipality-3 and currently residing in Sankhu, Harka Raj Rai (49) of Arun Rural Municipality-4, Jhapa and presently living in Budhanilkantha, Indian national Thapthen Tsering (53), customs agent Rajendra Rai and a taxi driver, Revenue Investigation Department spokesperson Nawaraj Adhikari said.

He said that they are yet to weigh all the gold.

“Acting on a tip off, we conducted a special operation and recovered 80 to 100 kg gold,” Department Director General Nawaraj Dhungana said, adding, “This may be the largest amount of gold recovered in Nepal so far.”

Police said that the gold, passed undetected through the Customs Office of the Tribhuvan International Airport, arrived in Kathmandu on Tuesday's Cathay Pacific flight.

The gold was brought in Kathmandu by concealing in the brake shoes of motorbikes and scooters.
