Rastriya Swatantra Party’s Khanal wins in Kathmandu-6

Rastriya Swatantra Party candidate Shisir Khanal has been elected as a member of the House of the Representative from Kathmandu-6. Khanal emerged victorious by securing 14, 204 votes. His closest contender Sarbendra Khanal of the CPN-UML got 8, 911 votes and Bhimsen Das Pradhan of the Nepali Congress garnered 8, 805 votes. Earlier, party’s Sobhita Gautam was elected in Kathmandu-2, Ganesh Parajuli in Kathmandu-7, Birajbhakta Shrestha in Kathmandu-8.

Khanal is the founder of Teach for Nepal, a campaign working to improve the education sector of Nepal. Sarbendra Khanal is the former Inspector General of Police while Pradhan is the former Defence Minister.

Twenty-four candidates, including 13 from different parties and 11 independents, were in the race for the HoR seat from Kathmandu-6.  There were 62,102 registered voters in this constituency stretching from Bagbazar via Gongabu to Kavresthali of Kathmandu district. The voter turnout in Sunday's election was 38,910. Out of this, 1,532 votes were invalid.
