Landslide blocks Hunga rivulet, downstream area residents urged to adopt precaution

The local administration has urged the people residing downstream areas of Dudhkoshi river to adopt precaution after a landslide blocked Hunga rivulet flowing through the border of Mahakulung Rural Municipality-4 and 5 in Solukhumbu.

Chief District Officer, Kaman Singh Thapa Magar, shared that the structure like dam of around 100-meter wide and 16-meter high was built after the landslide occurred at 7 am today blocked the rivulet.

He mentioned, "We have requested the residents of downstream areas to remain alert as well as to move towards safer places considering the possible risk as the landslide is still taking place."

Downstream areas would be affected if the water of the temporary pond built due to landslide is released all of sudden as Hunga rivulet is tributary of Dudhkoshi river, added the local administration.

Similarly, locals of Okhaldhunga and Khotang have also been asked to adopt precautions through the concerned District Administration Office, opined Thapa Magar.

Makakulung Rural Municipality has sent an excavator at the incident site, said chairperson Surya Bahadur Kulung.

Different hydropower projects are under construction at Hunge rivulet and its surroundings.

The local administration has urged the locals residing at banks of rivulet and rivers to remain alert and follow the information of security bodies.
